What's this type of door handle/ lock called?

And can you get them in the UK? This is a front door in the US and I love the style of handle and think it would be so handy to be able to open door from outside without a key (but I'm not a fan of the look of lever handles on front doors)

Isn't it a latch?

If you can open it without a key can't anyone?

I'm looking up some... Schlage Camelot are examples, but I can't seem to find the actual name of the type of latch.

C1N1C · 21/02/2024 16:11

Suffolk (thumb latch) is another

You really don't want a door you can open from the outside without a key!!

We had a random man enter our house by doing exactly that, fortunately I scared him off, we changed our handles pdq after that!!

Flockameanie · 21/02/2024 16:31

You can lock it from the inside (as you can with any front door with a lever handle). I just quite like that if you don't actively lock it you can get in and out (e.g. putting the bins out). We live in a safe area, so leaving it unlocked during day when we're in the house isn't an issue...

Yes, it is essentially a latch mechanism on the outside, but it doesn't operate a lift-up latch on the inside of the door, but works like a levered handle to pull back the mortice latch. It's a pretty standard front door handle/lock set up in the States, but I don't think I've seen it in the UK...

Ok. But I don't understand how it works so that only you can get in?

Maybe there would be another lock on the door or does this one only work with fingerprints?

I wonder what a UK home insurance company would think of it? Usually they insist on a certain type of lock to be prepared to offer insurance cover.

The same way that a lever door handle works. If it's unlocked, anyone can get in. If you lock it (which you can do from outside or inside using a key) then only a keyholder can get in...

Thanks. Alas I think PP is right about insurance, etc. I wish they did British Standard door handles like this!

You could have a Yale that you put on the latch when you take the bins out
plus a deadlock for when you go out.

Why? My door doesn’t lock unless I lock it. My insurance company has no issue. If I leave it unlocked you just push the door to open it from the outside.

IronNeonClasp · 21/02/2024 18:28

It’s a LOVELY door ! ❤️

Yes I would say this is much more available- the lock has a function where you push or pull a small button and then it’s “on the latch” and won’t lock itself behind you.

I live in a pretty safe area too but I still wouldn't ever leave my doors unlocked.

Ilovemyshed · 21/02/2024 21:28

If you look closely, the original picture does have a lock barrel above the handle. Its quite common in the UK to have a door that shuts with a lever handle but doesn't lock until you lift the handle and turn the key. I can't see that this would be any different.

Insurance usually demands a 5 lever mortice and / or a deadlock. You could do that with that handle.

Yes, that's what we're planning. But I like the look of the handle in the picture!

Yes, good point. If only I could find one in the UK!

The key word is “integrated”
and there is a key hole at the top, it’s been blurred photoshopped.

Yes, it's got a key hole above the handle. Thanks for that website - US though. It just seems that this handle doesn't exist in the UK! This is what i want though
