Dust is EVERYWHERE - HELP!

Ok. So I was obviously being unrealitstic. I honestly thought the builders would somehow 'zone' off the building works so that the dust stayed contained in the area they wee working.

We are having a wall down between small kitchen and dining room and have temporarilty decamped to the old dining room as obviously had to take all of the kitchen units down. So all our plates, bowls, cutlery, food etc is all out in the dining room.

Come home from work and it's all covered in about 3mm of brick dust. I could cry.

Still not finished - wall is coming down tomorrow so seems a little pointeless to even attempt to clean.

But am I being unreasonable/unrealistic? Could they not have attetmpted to cover up my things before starting?!

If your having a wall down then realistically both rooms need to be empty. There is no way you can keep the dust out of everything unless its a big room and half of it can be temporarily partitioned off ?

brightyellowflower · 20/02/2024 08:50

it is quite a big room and I'd have though they'd of at least chucked a dust sheets over our temporary kitchen bit!

I wasn't prepared for the entire house to be covered though too - upstairs looked like it hasn't been cleaned for months!

Brick/ plaster dust gets everywhere. I'd move want you need to another room and cover it when not in use

sweetpickle2 · 20/02/2024 09:07

Honestly OP a dust sheet wouldn't do much anyway, it gets in EVERYWHERE

TheNoonBell · 20/02/2024 09:15

There is no escape, the dust will get everywhere.

Just try to keep it together until they are finished.

Cielmonmari · 20/02/2024 09:42

And even when the work's finished you'll find a fine covering of dust everywhere till it settles!

TerfTalking · 20/02/2024 09:51

Sorry but dust will continue to fall for months gradually reducing.

When it’s all over, budget for a new broom, mop, duster, sponges, dustpan and handbroom etc. I kept my broom and mop handles and chucked the rest. Nothing will be nice to use in your lovely new kitchen.

I'm really sorry, it is rubbish. Maybe see if you could hire a hepa vacuum from a tool hire place to clean all of the upstairs. It wasn't so much money for a weeks use, and really helped. Then you'll have clean bedrooms. Can you hand wash a few bits in the bathroom for drinks and meals and keep them upstairs? Our temp kitchen was upstairs, and we got those zippered door covers to keep the dust out of a few places where we were living. And get a takeaway for the next couple of days.

It's miserable, but will be so nice when it's all done

SquashPenguin · 20/02/2024 14:18

The sheets wouldn’t do bugger all anyway. You have to accept that dust will get everywhere. We’ve just had huge renovation works finally completed and the clean up was huge. It’ll be a couple more weeks of cleaning before everything is truly gone though. It’s crap but it’s part and parcel with this kind of work!

Diyextension · 20/02/2024 15:24

When i built one of our extensions ( smallish) i taped polythene around a wooden frame and it kept 99% of the dust out . It was a bit tricky on the stairs but did the job.

i wouldn’t use black again as it made it too dark.
