Replacing old bath with jacuzzi type

Hi

All tips and advice welcome!

We are going to replace our old bath with a new one. It's double ended and we want a single ended one which will be more comfortable because it's only 1700 long.

But, while we do that, I'm thinking how lovely it would be to choose a bath with water and air jets.

Has anyone done this, or are any of you bathroom fitters, plumbers, electricians etc who maybe have some helpful tips for me?

Thank you!

We did it. It was lovely but was in a spare bathroom and so only used occasionally. If the main bath, it would need cleaning a lot and that is a bit of a pain in the bum as it requires filling it up and running the jets with special cleaning fluid.

SummerCycling · 25/02/2024 20:56

@Geneticsbunny

Thanks for your reply.

I hadn't known that about special cleaning fluid, thanks for the warning!

It's in our family bathroom but nobody else ever seems to use the bath - we also have a large walk-in shower.

Our current bath needs replacing either way and from what I understand the main costs are the removal of the old bath, replacing it with whatever new bath, the plumbing and the retiling, so I'm thinking adding in the jets will only be a small percentage of the overall cost, but add a lot to the enjoyment, relaxation etc of bathing. Well, good excuse anyway!! 😂

Do you find there's a big difference between the air and water jets? How many of each would you recommend?

We had a jacuzzi bath in the 90s when I was a teenager, my mum didn't know about the cleaning product and I once turned it on (luckily I wasn't in it) and black bits went everywhere, it was so disgusting...

So much so, that when we moved here there was a jacuzzi bath one of the first things I did was have it swapped for a normal bath.

Imonthebloodyphone · 25/02/2024 21:49

Don't do it. Unless you like bathing in flecks of black mould.
They're vile things. I got ours switched quite soon after we moved in, as soon as I realised what all the black bits were - and have never looked at any jacuzzi or hot-tub in the same way since.

Synergies · 25/02/2024 21:51

Just gross, sorry.

And uncomfortable to lean against metal nodules

NCA24 · 25/02/2024 21:53

Every single one of our baths are jets and it's disgusting. Everyone is right when they say you'll have bits of black mould in your bath and you'll need to buy expensive cleaning fluid and flush it out every few weeks. I'm going to change them one by one as soon as I have the money to.

modgepodge · 25/02/2024 22:02

Another one who has experienced the black bits of mould 🤢🤢🤢 even a week or two after cleaning with the special very expensive cleaning stuff. Would not recommend unless you will be running daily and cleaning daily. After only a few days the mould starts to build. Grim.

YourWinter · 25/02/2024 22:02

Awful things. Mine was put in by previous owners years ago. Filthy black muck spewing out of the jets is nobody’s idea of a nice bath. And as soon as kids are old enough for you to take your eyes off them they’ll push the button to make their bubbly bath into a foam party ( with filthy black bits) and so the build-up of muck in the pipes is perpetuated.

My house has a shared septic tank and the many, many bathfuls of water with the horrible stuff needed to even half clean the hidden pipes, makes the septic tank overfill and back up. Not good for the sewers if you’re on mains drainage.

Just don’t. If you’ve ever thought hot tubs are terrible, whirlpool baths are worse.

Chewbecca · 25/02/2024 22:20

We had the black fleck problem too. The same type you get in rubber ducks. I wouldn't go near one again.

Wormwoodgal · 25/02/2024 22:25

Our new home has one. I was looking forward to using it, but have only bothered once. Black bits, really noisy ... not the relaxing experience I was hoping for!
I'll change it when I can afford to.

Geneticsbunny · 26/02/2024 08:08

If you clean them regularly then you don't get the black bits.

Maddy70 · 26/02/2024 08:12

The extra special cleaning you have to do really isn't worth it. Its probemeatic abd if not done properly is really gross

Dearg · 26/02/2024 08:13

We put one in a previous home, years ago. We never got any black bits floating, but I was religious in my cleaning of it. Which was a pain, and involved a lot of rinsing through after the cleaning fluid was flushed through.
Would not do it again.
There was a thing for these in hotels many years ago, and I have vivid memories of turning them on and various bits of hair and detritus floating out 🤮

crumpet · 26/02/2024 08:15

Aside from the cleaning issues (which I wasn’t aware of) on the few times I’ve tried a jacuzzi bath they have all been rubbish. The jets have been of such low intensity that they may as well have not been on. Plus the nodules are uncomfortable. I wouldn’t waste the money.

Crabwoman · 26/02/2024 09:06

My DP had one. Echo the black bits unless you are religious about the cleaning.

The other thing was the noise. Sounded like the kitchen ceiling was going to come through everytime it was switched on and not at all relaxing when you were in it. This was 20 years ago though, so they may be quieter now.

TempleOfBloom · 26/02/2024 09:21

Surely you would need to put in electricity to run it alongside all the other Bath replacement works?

They sound like an environmental nightmare, all these cleaning chemicals and extra water.

Thank you so much everyone. Following your advice, we are not going to change the bath. I'm so happy I asked the question and found out before going ahead!

They are apparently an utter nightmare to clean, can get very gross if not and can break... I wouldn't get one to be honest.
