Money goes so much further in Scotland

OhBeAFineGuyKissMe · 18/02/2024 19:50

I live in Hampshire but my husband is Scottish and always wants to move back up there. So to daydream once a week I search Argyll and Bute for dream houses.

This one is gorgeous. https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/144780485#/?channel=RES_BUY

Where is your daydream location / houses?

It’s only particular parts of Scotland - it’s like comparing London to Hull.
The offers over system of sealed bids is also horrendous.

Brokeandbroker · 18/02/2024 19:53

Money goes so much further in some areas of the UK. I think is more accurate. There will be cheaper and more expensive areas all over the country. Scotland isn't cheap compared to the other countries overall

Malbecmoron · 18/02/2024 19:55

It's gorgeous. Helensburgh would be a nice place to live I think.

AgentProvocateur · 18/02/2024 19:56

Beautiful, and Helensburgh would be a great town to live in.

OhBeAFineGuyKissMe · 18/02/2024 20:13

I know prices vary all over the UK but I can’t think of a seaside town, with amazing properties and less than a hour by train into a major city that this wouldn’t be well over £1million and around here over 2.

I am familiar with Helensburgh and it is really nice town, ok it does rain a little bit (it is right next door to a rainforest).

It is a daydream location, jobs and school mean it won’t happen for a long time. I can’t be the only 1 who has a daydream location they look at?

Yeah, money goes further if you're moving from the south of England and helping to price the locals out!

Hatty65 · 18/02/2024 20:30

First answer nails it! You are in the Home Counties. My DH is also Scottish - from Fife. My MiL spends a lot of time marvelling that we have chosen to live near my family as 'England is so expensive'. I'm from Lincolnshire. She genuinely can't grasp that it is much cheaper than Fife.

Near her: £1. 75 million

Small houses in Yorkshire

ShittyGlitter · 18/02/2024 20:43

Helensburgh is absolutely full of people from England, maybe because you do get more for your money.
The actual sold price of a house can look very different from the price you see on Rightmove though, but one can always dream of a bargain!

Cielmonmari · 18/02/2024 20:45

She genuinely can't grasp that it is much cheaper than Fife.

She's not alone. Very recently someone posted that Scotland seems to be a lot cheaper than the rest of the UK, even Edinburgh.

So Edinburgh is cheaper than the cheapest areas of England and Wales? I don't think so. (I don't know anything about house prices in N. Ireland).

OhBeAFineGuyKissMe · 18/02/2024 20:52

Sorry if I offended anyone, my husband is from Glasgow and has always dreamed of living on the West Coast, for him it would be returning home as he has family around that area as well.

I know prices vary from place to place in Scotland, same as they do anywhere, it is just for similar areas the pricing is a lot less for a lot more house. And with a much more sensible buying process so once accepted you have to proceed.

Though that is a daydream house we would never really look at it, as it is far bigger than we would need and need more maintenance. It is just such a stunning property and even if it goes for a lot over asking price will still be an amazing house for someone. And commutable to Glasgow, if you so wish.

@OhBeAFineGuyKissMe Sorry if I seemed snippy! You didn't offend me.

The house in Helensburgh is lovely, but is likely to go for close to £1,000,000. I just find it surprising that folks in or near London seem to think that anything around the £800,000 mark is somehow a bargain, or doable in any way for the rest of us.

I was posting houses in Lincolnshire that most people round her can't actually afford. Big detached 5 bedroom ones. I would say that most people round here are actually buying things like this - very pleasant, 3 bedroom semi for £149,000.

It does feel like folks 'down South' are out of touch with how most of the rest of us live.

I think most are aware of how crazy house prices are down south - they are eye watering and hard to image how they are affordable.

I am late 40s so benefited from uni grants and brought a starter property (tenement in Glasgow) that isn’t affordable on current starter incomes, so I am aware how lucky I am and how much harder it is now.

I just am always amazed that somewhere as nice as Helensburgh, near the coast, good public transport, has (relatively I know) low prices. It is also lower relative to St Andrews (link above) and other East coast places that I don’t think are as nice.

Took the words right out my mouth. I resent remote working for this reason alone.
All the southerners are moving into northern cities bidding and pricing out the locals.

It’s so frustrating especially for first time buyers and renters.
The wages just don’t compare to bid against southerners on property

You do realise that would be at least double the price in Edinburgh?

HannahinHampshire · 18/02/2024 21:46

I’m looking forward to moving back to Perthshire from Hampshire in the next couple of years when I retire. My tiny Hampshire cottage should go for circa 400k and I’m looking at 3 bed semis in the region of 250k. Can’t wait to go ‘home’ now that the kids have flown the nest.

Parts of the North east and Northumberland, coastal or rural, less than a million and less than an hour into Newcastle.
Tynemouth is beautiful, Alnwick too.

I suppose it is all relative really. I really dislike Helensburgh strongly and don't think it is nice at all. The house you posted does look lovely though 😍

What about all the people who have moved into London and the South East and priced all the locals out???

Always hear this trotted out but you don't hear Londoners being all local houses for local people (to paraphrase Royston Vasey).

WednesburyUnreasonable · 19/02/2024 07:24

OP has said her husband is originally from Scotland multiple times, does he need to dump her before this thread will avoid attracting comments about southerners driving up house prices?

Housing is in a miserable state across the UK, and it’s easy to point a finger at “outsiders” near you rather than decades of shit policies and decisions. I moved to London from a small village in Scotland, contributing to the housing misery of people born here. No doubt if I ever move back with the equity from my London house, people will hate that too.

Yes, this. I live up north in England and houses like the one in the OP would be a similar price if not slightly cheaper in my region. i.e. way, way out of my budget 😃
