Full fibre installation

Hi please can I have some advice.
I'm having full fibre installed soon, and I don't know where to put the boxes inside.
I've watched the open reach video and I'm not clear on what it will look like. Can anyone please explain how many wires each box will need, and what they need to connect to?

Currently our phone line comes in to a tiny box at the top of the stairs, then there is wiring hidden in the walls that goes to my study, where there's another box that I plug the phone and router to. Next to power sockets.
There's no power on the stairs.

Obviously I'd rather avoid wires stapled all over my walls wherever possible.

So am I right in thinking I should get the new wire to come in directly to the study where I can plug the router in?

Another option I have is underneath the TV, which is also on an external wall, and has a billion sockets already.

i assume you are in a house. With a full fibre installation it involves getting a fibre cable into the property then installing a small white box (called a ONT) internally which yo7 router will plug into. The ONT has to have its own power so a spare plug socket will be required. The Ont will have 3 wires from it which is power cable, then the fibre cable then an Ethernet cable which plus into the router. If you want less internal cables run then it’s usually best to place the Ont near the external wall which the fibre cable will enter. The engineer will usually need to drill a small hole to get the fibre cable inside. Sounds like you already have a couple of options.

I wasn't given a choice. The white box had to be fitted to the front of the property meaning that both the router and phone, which were in the Study upstairs, had to be moved to the living room. If I'd known in advance I wouldn't have done it. I'm about to face the same issue at my new place and if it has to go on the front of the property that means the phone and router will have to be in the main bedroom, which I really don't want, so I may end up without full fibre unless I can persuade them to run a few metres of extra cable round the side of the property where my Study will be.

I do not think it matters much where it is sited, mine is in the living room . Unless you have an old or bigger house the WFI should work everywhere.

Ideally you want the wi-fi router to be in the middle of the house for the best coverage.

I was able to get the installers to run the fibre down the side of my house and in under the stairs. Obviously you need power as well.

I also find it's a better place for the growing number of hubs that need to be attached these days.

The default is often to put it at the front as it's easiest for them, and often the worse place for it.

Thanks everyone. I'm hoping I can have it put in the cupboard under the stairs. This is directly below where the current phone line comes in, so hopefully will be quite straightforward.
The only potential problem I can see is that this is also where the electricity comes in, and our circuit breakers box is, so there are a lot of cables there already. Would the magnetic fields from all the cables interfere with the broadband?

If it's anything like what happened to me they came and fixed the external box to the wall when I wasn't in then, when the guy came to install the internal box, he said I could have the inside box where I liked so long as it was behind the TV Grin He was reluctant to put it upstairs (I wanted it on the landing) as they need to drill through from the outside (health and safety, ladders, etc.).

The inside box needs to be near an electrical socket so in the electric cupboard probably won't work unless you have sockets in there. Don't forget, you will need to plug your house phone into it when you go digital - your existing phone sockets won't work.

No.
But don't forget you'll need a power socket.

The issue seems to be that the wire used for fibre doesn't bend very easily (the glass breaks), so they will look for a power socket that is nearest the front of the house. If the wifi doesn't reach all of the house then they will tell you to get a range booster. A cupboard under the stairs sounds like it might not work. It may also weaken the signal.

NB if you want to put it in the cupboard just to hide it, then you can get some quite attractive router boxes / covers that can be wall mounted. You then just have the issue of hiding the cable between the router and the power socket.

Ah this is good to know. It's so frustrating that they don't tell you in advance. I struggle to make decisions on the spot, so I really appreciate your help.
