I know it's not expensive, but I was going to "upcycle" this hallstand. I'm set on sanding back the top surface and staining and waxing, and decoupage on the drawer insets. I will be changing the hardware.
Trying to set up a poll but if it doesn't work, would you paint the rest :dark blue, burgundy or white. And what hardware: silver, black or gold.
Thanks so much

It's a good piece for a big hallway. To go against the crowd - if it was mine I would be getting rid of the stained glass - it's not good - easy to get a piece cut for it. Then I'd be trying to give it a dark stain if I wanted to keep it as wood. I wouldn't go Navy. I'd chose Eating Room by F&B - I am obsessed by it atm. You can see this shade of red finding its way into rooms in all the magazines, often just one item will be this colour but their always something.

So sorry for the very, very late reply. I paid $45 for it which is about 20 pounds or less

What did you end up doing with it op?

SecretSoul · 12/01/2025 07:20

Yes, I’m interested too OP!

I probably would have painted it cream or navy so interested in what you decided.

Sorry, but I don’t think decoupage is nice at all. Looks really dated. I’d sand it and finish the wood with a matt paint. Little Green or Farrow and ball do lovely colours to complement the stained glass. It’s essential to get rid of the orange varnish. Otherwise you can water down Matt paint to end up with a limed effect. Then finish with a Matt varnish for durability. I don’t think there is money to be made through. This is just if you decide to keep it for yourself.

NOTHING YET! I have had the year from hell, but I'm leaning towards cream and dark bronze hardware. I thought of a marble offcut for the top but that seems a lot of faff. I will update when I'm done. The rate I;m goingthat will be a loooooong time. Bookmark me. I'll get there eventually. Do you really think I won't make the equivalent of 20[pounds back. I though it was a bargain. Sigh. moving on to next plan to make money. I have 2 fenced acres . ANy suggestions appreciated. x

I think the days of being able to slap a bit of paint on an old fashioned piece and sell for a large margin are well and truly over now op.

Money conscious people will simply do it themselves - they now have a million examples on social media of exactly how to do it. Those not money conscious aren't spending ££ on stuff like this that someone has self painted and chucked on FB marketplace 🤷‍♀️

You say $. Are you in Australia? Strip it and oil it, or paint it burgundy or dark green to go with Federation houses. But I love natural wood.

However, two fenced acres. I think there was a discussion in The Doghouse about renting space out as an enclosed dog paddock. IIRC, the balance was as a nice little earner. Good fencing and gates, parking, rubbish bins, water troughs, a seat or two and a few obstacles for agility training. I don’t know about insurance. If you put up another one or two fences, you can have more than one income stream. (Plant some shrubbery along the fencelines).
