Any idea for blocking light from open Velux window?

Bit of a weird one but wondering if anyone else has found a solution for this ahead of the lighter evenings...

The window in our bedroom (which we share with our 17 month old) is a large Velux and while we have a black-out blind, it obviously sits inside the window frame so when the window is opened it goes up with it.

I was just wondering if anyone had seen/thought of a fix to block some light when the window is open? Our flat is in the eves so gets very hot in the summer so we need the windows open really.

All I can think of is buying some kind of dark mesh and somehow attaching it to the blind and the lower windowsill but I can't think how I'd actually do this in reality?

Open to any tips! Thanks

PS. Obviously this is in aid of the baby daughter's sleep! Previously it was never an issue as the light in the mornings doesn't bother myself and DP and we were not in bed early enough for light evenings to be an issue.

Both not true for 1 year old 😒

It won't be perfectly blacked out but you can buy a couple of these tension rods and some black out fabric and pop them up inside the window recess.

My mum used drawing pins and fabric for hers

Thanks both, will have a think.

It's a pain because even if I was to pin something inside the wider window cavity the velux still needs a certain amount of room to be able to swing open.

Probably be better off keeping the window closed and getting an aircon unit 😂

I used stick on Velcro stuck onto wall around the window and some black out lining with Velcro sewn around edges and stuck it on. Both cheap from a sewing shop, I just cut it to fit the size of the window and sewed short strips onto the fabric.

Previous owners had used a normal roller blind fixed to wall above and below ve lux window .
Would that help?

Ideally you'd install an awning so the sun doesn't even get to your window, but I've no idea if the shape of your roof permits that.

Regardless, keeping windows open in the heat is a really really bad idea. Open them overnight, then close in the morning. Use a high-velocity ventilator for an exchange of air both mornings and evenings - bonus points if you can create a cross-draft. For protection, reflecting blinds, ideally on the outside of the window so the glass doesn't even get to warm up. Worst case, improvise with car rescue blankets which are great at reflecting heat yet thin enough to still let light through.

My daughter's blinds sit on the outer frame so do not go up when she opens the velux - they were already there so can't say the brand but it must be out there.

Thanks everyone - blinds on the wall outside the window sounds like a good shout, might look into that.

Unfortunately we're in a leasehold flat so can't add anything to the outside of the walls so no awning possible.

I don't leave the windows open in the heat of the day but it can get up to 28+ degrees when it's been very hot outside so I do need to open them once the day has cooled. Just don't want baby DD waking up with the sunrise at 4am! And ideally would be able to open the window a bit for when she goes to bed too but sometimes it hasn't cooled enough by then.

I realise this is an old thread but OP if you’re still there, did you find a solution? I am having a similar problem with light coming in the open Velux

Get one of these and attach it to the velux frame. Then the window can open behind it whilst still blocking the light coming in. We do this when we stay at DM's as the room the DC sleep in has a velux.

The material is thin enough that if the suckers don't work, you can use tacks instead.
