Contact from company saying we may have overpaid stamp duty - is this a scam?

We’ve now received two letters from companies claiming that we may have overpaid stamp duty when we purchased our house last year. Are these a con? Looks like they’re advising that a partial refund could be due for fixtures and fittings etc and are offering to help on a no win no fee basis. Sounds too good to be true really but is it worth a phone call?

Not worth the phone call.

Solicitors in the past may have disregarded a small amount of your purchase price for fixtures and fittings and your stamp duty was paid on the price less this disregard.
Nowadays, the amount of fixtures and fittings is generally valued as negligible. And so you pay stamp duty on the whole price.
The way to tell if you overpaid is, how much did you declare to your mortgage provider? If you said total purchase price and your LTV was calculated on that, fixtures and fittings were zero. If you declared a value of less than your purchase price to your mortgage company, you might , just have a case. But it’s a long shot.
Not a solicitor, just purchased houses a lot over the last 30 years.

I wouldn’t be phoning some random company that could well be a scam. If in doubt I would phone the solicitor you used to purchase the house & ask them about it.

We had multiple letters after we purchased in 2021 in our case on research we found that it was possible we could be due a small refund as we have an annex, but the amount was sufficiently low that we felt it wasn't worth our time so didn't pursue it.
