Has anyone had a good experience with Solicitors from Meaby & Co LLP?

Me and my partner finally had an offer accepted on an apartment in south london. We are looking for solicitors and want to avoid getting burnt by going with the wrong company (as I've heard time and time before).

Has anyone heard of Meaby? Had a good experience with them?

Also very welcoming of your recommendations and if any names come to mind.

Thanks!

Not heard of them. But someone on here recommended Threemo when we asked. We have used them twice now and have been really happy . They are online only but our experience with them has been better than the large national firm we used the time before. It's Threemo.co.uk I think

Full disclosure - I work for Meaby & Co. I'll try and be as neutral as possible as I don't want to look like I'm advertising. Why don't you give us a call and talk through how we can help you. That way, you'll get a feeling for whether we're suitable for you - and the same applies to any other firm that you may have had recommended to you.

However you decide to proceed though, try not to base your decision on price - good conveyancing is rarely cheap, and cheap conveyancing is rarely good. I think the best advice I could give would be to look at reviews (you can be sure that reviews on Review Solicitors and Estas are from genuine clients), listen to recommendations from friends and colleagues, ask the estate agents if they have a local firm that they have had good experiences with (although be sure to ask the estate agents if they are paid referral fees for their recommendations - that's not always a bad thing, but it may stop the agents from giving an entirely honest opinion).

Best of luck with the purchase!

From @NavySheep 's answer, it doesn't sound like they're one of those conveyancing factories with paralegals doing billions of cases at the same time. It's so rare these days to find proper conveyancers! When you find one (which you have), I'd hold onto them!

dizzydizzydizzy · 13/02/2024 09:42

I used RIAA Barker Gillette about 18 months ago. They were good. The estate agent recommended them to me. They are in North London but ithe location doesn't matter - everything was online .

I agree with @NavySheep. Don't cheap out on a conveyancing shed- it's worth checking whether a solicitor will be handling your case (nb: lawyer is not a protected term and anyone can use it; solicitor is, and can only be used by those with the correct qualifications)

I’d add “licensed conveyancer” to that - they’re as qualified to do conveyancing as solicitors, the key part of that being “licensed”. Anyone can call themselves a conveyancer, but only a qualified person can call themselves a licensed conveyancer.

Most firms, including the conveyor belt “sell em cheap, stack em high” firms, will have qualified lawyers running the files, but those firms will usually have a solicitor supervising a dozen or so “case handlers”. Be wary of those firms - it’s easy enough to identify them though, because they’re very cheap and a quick Google search will tell you everything you need to know about their customer service.

If the OP wants to get in touch with Meaby, feel free to send me a private message and I can arrange for one of our solicitors to give you a call. (But again, I’m new here and wary about touting - that’s definitely not my intention!)

They’re an excellent firm too. Location won’t be too important for most firms, as long as the client is tech-savvy enough to download an ID verification app. If not, that’s the only reason I think you should choose a local
firm, so that identity/anti money laundering checks can be done in person.

I used Meaby in Camberwell, they were good for conveyancing.

Be very careful with them. They costed me extra thousands of pounds some time after assisting with my property purchase. They failed to run proper checks and I only found out about unpaid taxes once the property was mine. So disappointing. Of course they ignored me when I brought the problem to their attention as they must have known it was too late for the Ombudsman. I don’t recommend them.

Thisoldheartofmine · 26/08/2024 07:59

@MaddieAnonimoux that does sound terrible.
But ... I've had experience with Meaby regarding probate and wills and found them nothing but helpful and experienced.
Maybe their conveyancing dept isn't representative of the firm in general?
Although that would be odd.
Can you start your own thread for advice?
If they missed things they should be held accountable.

MoonBean2 · 26/08/2024 08:05

Would highly recommend on our side - we worked with Edward Chuck on our property purchase also in South London. Super efficient and to the point - did a great job making sure we understood all the relevant info before going ahead, especially as we were first time buyers and less familiar with the process!

They were a bit more expensive than other options and replies tended to take 2-3 days rather than being super quick, but when they did get back to us the reply usually has everything we needed to know and so we avoided a lot of back and forth.

Hope helpful! We went with Edward / Meaby as they were recommended by our mortgage broker as consistently easy to work with conveyancers too, so hopefully not an isolated experience.

Yes! We were recommended them and they were absolutely excellent! Have recommended the guy we used to several friends subsequently. DM me I'd you'd like his details.

This is an old thread and I'm sure the OP is sorted now.
I was responding to@MaddieAnonimoux .

I smell BS. I’ve used Meaby more than once for property matters and they were excellent. I’m also a solicitor (my firm doesn’t handle property), so I’ve got a good idea about what standards to expect.

Have you actually made a complaint to them? All law firms have a complaints procedure. You can’t just accuse a firm of burying a problem if they didn’t know about it. If they did know about it, and ignored your complaint, you could still go to the Ombudsman as the clock only starts ticking on that when you discover the problem.

Thisoldheartofmine · 26/08/2024 11:02

Could it be uninformed rather than BS.I wonder?
I really rate Meaby.

Yes, perhaps. I’d also suggest that there’s a negligence issue rather than a customer service issue, so approaching a professional negligence solicitor not the Ombudsman would be appropriate. But that person’s experience is certainly at odds with my own experience of Meaby’s property department.
