Regret moving

Just moved into a place with lots of work to do and don’t know where to start

It sounds like you are overwhelmed. It's a huge change and is normal to have a wobble. Don't feel like you have to do everything immediately. Get a feel for the place. Sometimes you need to live somewhere for a while to decide what works and what doesn't for you. I'd make a list and decide priorities. See if there are some quick inexpensive things you can do to make it feel more like yours.

heldinadream · 10/02/2024 13:47

What needs doing @Newnams ?
Have you got a functioning kitchen and bathroom and somewhere reasonable to sleep?
Is it big jobs or lots of little ones? Is it just you on your own?
We're moving soon and will have things that need doing and I'm having sleepless nights thinking about it all. But I think organisation is the key.

Meadowfinch · 10/02/2024 14:06

Make a list of the things that need doing, room by room.

Allocate a priority to each - safety, essential, cleanliness, nice to have, decorative.

Then decide which order to do things in, and pace yourself, this is a marathon, not a sprint.

One hint. I'm on house 4, and it helps to have one room done and comfortable. Then when it all gets too much, you can retreat to that room, close the door & relax.

Good luck.

Am complete overwhelmed, have got 3 skylights that are leaking and need replacing. Also I no longer have a combi boiler instead a heat only boiler with a hot water tank which I don’t like. Every room has old wallpaper, there is more but can’t face up to thinking about it.

Start with the biggest/messiest (usually structural) jobs and work from there. There's no point redecorating if a rewire, new windows, and the heating system needs replacing, you'll just be throwing your money away.

LightSwerve · 10/02/2024 15:10

Make it safe and watertight.

Wait for your feelings to settle to do anything not urgent.

It's a marathon not a sprint.

Norpeth · 10/02/2024 15:13

Op we've just bought our first house and it was the same. Old wallpaper and filthy big patterned carpets. Same boiler with water tank whereas we had always had a combi boiler. Everything needs doing. Mould in the back of all the kitchen cupboards. Bath not attached to the wall. I could go on. We've got 4 kids, one with ASD and hates change which added to the stress. apart from the coat of rewiring and new flooring, we had zero money to sort any of these problems so have had to do 99% ourselves.

When we got the keys I felt the same. Completely overwhelmed but nearly 2 months on, it's so much better now. Instead of a new problem every day, it's probably only one a week now haha. Seriously though, well done on your new home, you will get used to it. Concentrate on cleaning the kitchen and bathroom and somewhere to sleep. Do you have partner/kids?

Newnams · 10/02/2024 17:18

This was a move from somewhere that was very small a cramped but so stressed about it now really wish I would of stayed.

You're having a bad day and when that happens everything seems worse and it's easy to spiral. Try and get the leaks sorted asap. Hope you feel better soon.

mentalbandwidth · 10/02/2024 17:35

Similar position here OP we've had some rather large unexpected issues show themselves with our recent move too 🫠

I'm trying to recategorise the plan we had originally and keep repeating it'll be a full marathon rather than a half
Marathon' and it took us 10 years to get our previous home 'just so'

Wind & Water tight - this was not on the original plan
Safe & secure
Warm - this wasn't on the plan either. Boiler wasn't working on moving day and then 3 days later condemned (currently with the lawyers)
Cleanliness
Decorative
Nice to have

NEVER moving again 🤯

Roselilly36 · 10/02/2024 17:36

Deep breath OP, you moved for good reason. Assuming you intend this to be a medium/long term move. Make a list of jobs, deal with the important issues in order, electrics, make water tight etc. You will get there, totally normal to feel overwhelmed. It will be ok, just take your time.

Newnams · 12/02/2024 20:51

I also think I paid too much for the place can someone offer an opinion on it’s value if I post a link

Rainbowbrite83 · 12/02/2024 21:26

Yes post a link OP.

We've lived in a 'project house' now for nearly 5 years, and because we have no money we do most stuff ourselves. It's slow and frustrating, but I agree with a pp who said concentrate firstly on getting it watertight and warm.

With each job it gets a bit better!

Tupster · 13/02/2024 09:24

1/ don't even think about the value - that's done, you can do nothing about it. You just have to move on.

2/ Start with a "safe" room, like your bedroom or the living room. Just focus on getting that clean and nice and comfortable, so you've got one bit of the house that feels done and like it's yours. Then no matter what else is going on with refurbishment you have a place to go back to and make it feel like it'll all be worth it.

Don't worry about the price. I'm fairly certain I overpaid for my home because of a bullying estate agent/first time buyer. But I'm not moving, this is my only home so for me it's of no consequence what I paid for it. Try and have that mindset.
