We are considering a downstairs extension, mainly to get a bigger kitchen/ dining/ living space. 3 dc under 4 and it feels as if we are constantly split (1 person in the kitchen, other adult plus dc in the living room).

Issues with the architect’s plan - I’m not sure there is space for a table, and we lose kitchen units/ worktop space AND end up with 3 living spaces.

I’ve tried to creatively pinch some room from the new study for the utility, and then from the utility to add extra kitchen space but would love any other creative ideas.

The red markup is my suggestions, blue mark up shows where kitchen currently is (will swap to new extension side of the room).

Thank you!

I'm confused, is the new extension just the bit with the bifold doors across the back of the house, or is it all the way down the side of the house as well? And what is going in where the old kitchen was? Can you post the original floorplan, and the architects suggested floorplan?

yes! It’s down the side and a little bit at the back. This is the current plan, although we have knocked the wall down in red and swapped kitchen/ dining room round

I think your plan is good, the study doesn't need to be so big, so pushing the utility back into that space does help make the kitchen a bit bigger. If possible I would try and keep the wall opposite the bifold doors flat though, as otherwise it feels clunky jutting back and forth. Though a cubby bit near to the utility might be handy to hide mess in!
Getting enough room for a table is also tricky. Maybe if you moved the door from the hall instead of going into the kitchen/diner at the end of the hall, have it coming off where it currently is?

Does the utility have to come off the kitchen? If you didn't have a door to the utility from kitchen you could have more units? The utility and downstairs loo could be combined maybe, or both accessed off the hall under the stairs?
