Skip Hire experience anyone?

I've never hired a skip before. Quotes online look like about £250 per week. How long do people hire them for? Do you need a licence from the council? thankyou!

You need council permission if it's going to be on the road. If you have a drive it's going on you don't need any licence.

I've done it three times, for a week each. It's really fun! I'm trying to persuade DH we need one again but he's not convinced.

I'm looking forward to it too!
No drive, it's going on the street :( Does the skip hire company get the licence or the individual
Have you ever hired a bigger sized one?
I've bought a 3 bed house and inherited all the contents at auction. The house is stuffed full, even clothes in the wardrobes, old carpets, etc. I will try and recycle what I can, but...

You have to get the licence. I'm afraid ours have always been on the drive so don't know any more about that process sorry.

NewspaperTaxis · 05/02/2024 23:38

I found the cost is based around the size of the skip, and you could have the skip not quite indefinitely but for a good few weeks. (It varies according to the firm, I guess.) That said, it's best to move quick and get the stuff in and get it gone, or there's nothing to stop other people just offloading bits of junk in it, or even dog walkers with their dog poo which is disgusting but they will do that.

So a quick in and out strategy can avoid that. I think there are some things you CAN'T put in a skip, can't recall what but do check them out.

Diyextension · 06/02/2024 00:29

Ive filled plenty of skips in my time but never seen it as fun ? 🥳. Around here if you want it on the street the skip companies sort the permit and just charge you for it. Its 10 days and then an extra £10 per week if you want it longer.

CatchAButterfly · 06/02/2024 00:33

That sounds steep. When we were renovating, we had an 8 yard skip for £260. We had it for a few weeks before we then replaced it for another skip, same size and price. When I looked into it, it was more common to have a one off price per hire, rather than a weekly cost.

There are certain materials you can’t put in them, and you’d need a specialist company to deal with those materials if needed.

Diyextension · 06/02/2024 00:40

Yes you pay for the skip depending on size and you get it for a ten day period, if you need it longer than that then its £10 a week extra. Before covid you could hire a skip and keep it as long as you needed it ( 3 months 😉) but the surge in demand for them during the pandemic forced them to put a time limit on them. £10 a bit steep 😂

It's just so satisfying! I was on a work call the other day when I was distracted by the neighbours having a skip delivered. Mentioned I was jealous and 2 others on the call both agreed and said they'd loved having a skip when they did. So it's not just me that thinks it's fun and exciting 😂

outdepth · 06/02/2024 08:38

I had mine for a day a few years back, so the length of hire must be variable. I had everything ready and for it filled in a couple of hours and then uplifted.

TheFlis · 06/02/2024 08:43

I have a skip right now! 😀We are having work done on the house. It’s a 6 yard, they were able to deliver it the same day and it cost £240 for however long we have it. I looked at several websites for quotes and they all seemed to be the same price in my area.

Ametora · 06/02/2024 08:47

£250 will be a disappointingly small skip- check the sizes well.

drowninginsick · 06/02/2024 08:48

When we had one on the st the company sorted it and just included the cost in the hire price 🙂

bravotango · 06/02/2024 08:49

When we've hired skips the company has always arranged the on-road licence, just added the cost on top (think it was about £20 or so). Get everything ready to chuck in before the skip arrives, then fill it as quickly as you can or other people might tip into it! And get the biggest one you can afford, much cheaper to do that than have to get a second one (in my experience...)

tanstaafl · 06/02/2024 08:52

Pre covid experience… the cost depends on the size and what you’re putting in it.
soil, rubble is the cheapest iirc , building materials more expensive.
For plaster board you’re expected to double bag it.
we had it up to four weeks but that might have been demand driven I suppose.
cost was £180 for the one size down from largest for building materials.
( north wales )

Merrow · 06/02/2024 08:52

Are you hiring it for yourself or for builders to use? I found that mentioning the plumber that had told me which company to phone knocked off the time limit to "whenever Brendan's finished with it". They sorted the council license as part of the fee.

wonkylegs · 06/02/2024 11:43

It can really depend on the area, how big the skip is, how busy the skip company is & what's going in it. Some rubbish is more expensive than other stuff.
Check with the skip hire company if there are any restrictions - some won't take plasterboard or it needs to be bagged up separately (plasterboard when it gets wet has a chemical reaction that can cause problems for waste disposal)
So the last one we hired was an 8cubic yards which is a big one and I've just looked it up it was £204 for a mixed load with no time limit in our driveway but we are rural, easy access and skip company has loads of availability and I know that it can be more expensive in town.
It can depend on the company/area if they will get the licence for the road & lights (which you require on the road) might be extra.
Make sure you see the licence if you aren't getting it yourself and you see their waste disposal licence.

Geneticsbunny · 06/02/2024 18:44

If you have a load of furniture and clothes you could probably get a house clearance company to take stuff and save yourself some money. Clearing a whole 3 bed house of furniture is going to be a seriously large number of skips!

Top tip, if you are getting rid of doors you can stick them in the ends of the skip to make them higher and then you can fit more in. Also useful for lettuce leaves at a salad bar.

CMOTDibbler · 06/02/2024 18:53

I'd get a house clearance company in instead if there is that much stuff - they'll bring a lorry and do all the carrying and disposal then it will all be gone in a day rather than filling a skip, waiting for it to be collected and a new one delivered and repeat

It may be easier to get a house clearance company in

WhereDidTheSunshineGo · 06/02/2024 18:57

freecycle first!

I think I’ll need one or two for building waste & one for household. That’s a great tip re: Brendan thank you 😅

ComfortableAtLastTookLongEnough · 06/02/2024 22:12

Do not overfill it, skip drivers are a different breed and have been known to tip the skip until part of the load is back on the drive.

Do not put boards up the sides of it, these are known as greedy boards and the same treatment will apply.

No paint, no wet cement, no asbestos and no fires…..( you would be surprised)

Alicewinn · 06/02/2024 22:12

@Geneticsbunny @CMOTDibbler @Ilovemyshed

yes i think you’re right 🙏
it is too much stuff for a skip I hadn’t even thought about house clearance companies. There will be building waste later so can save the skip for then

OP posts:
Alicewinn · 06/02/2024 22:15

@ComfortableAtLastTookLongEnough ok thanks for this ! I suppose it’s like going to the dump - you keep the classification as one thing e.g household , timber, building waste etc ?
