How small can a utility room be?

Wondering if I can fit a usable utlity room into the space marked hallway on this floor plan.

The bit with doors open on the left of the plan is essentially a long thin cupboard. I'm thinking of dismantling that and putting up a stud wall where the blue line is. That would give a space of about 145x145cm so more of a utlity cupboard than room...

Is that enough space for a row of cabinets (grey) with a stacked washer and dryer (green)?

Could make it bigger by putting wall where the red line is, but this would make stairs feel cramped and need more thinking about in terms of wall/bannister/etc.

Pics of plan attached. Can't seem to add a second pic of the space. Will try again in a bit.

Would appreciate any and all thoughts.

Would also love to see any pics of anyone else's well thought out utility spaces for inspiration if anyone is willing to share.

I guess it depends on the dimensions of the space. If funds/expertise permits, I’d regig the whole space to including the wc etc.

Mine is 190x190 and works fine - can you have the door swing outwards or make a sliding one? That is usually the biggest issue space wise.

Thanks Highrisk. Worth thinking about it. Not sure I'll have the funds, though. MUCH needs doing to the house, so trying to keep things as simple as possible at this point.

Thanks for this. Yes, should be ok having the door swing outwards. Good to know 190x190 is a big enough space, thanks.

I put a top loader in mine to use a small floor space. No need for room to open doors outwards.

HousePlans · 03/02/2024 08:35

ToHell that's a great idea. Hadn't thought of that. Thanks!

I have a utility space that’s 110cm by 150cm. I have washing machine and tumble dryers stacked in fitted cupboards, another cupboard on top and a cupboard to the side. I’ve got a broom holder on the wall and space for a drying rack. It’s small but functional.

Would the appliances and plumbing fit in the existing cupboard?
Google utility cupboard ideas for examples.

Could you open up the downstairs loo and have a counter top and your machines in there?

Having had a utility corridor, I hated it. Used to whack your arse on the wall unloading things! We knocked it into the main room to make that a better size and his the appliances.

Would it be better to embrace the cupboard and transform it into something more useable. Like this? You get clever door hinges that fold back
