What on earth has happened here

I’m looking at houses and came across this behind the loo. Does anyone know what’s happened here, if if it’s an expensive fix? The rest of the house looks good…

No help but its obviously water damage. It could be a leaky loo or damp coming from outside. I’ll be watching as I have something similar but can’t source the issue.

Numberfish · 29/01/2024 21:25

Weird. You think if it was fixable they’d do it before posting pics. Maybe a surveyor knocked damp out?

AuntieJoyce · 29/01/2024 21:30

Maybe they’re tunnelling out

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 29/01/2024 21:32

Curious as to the weird boxed in section behind the toilet …

WonderingWanda · 29/01/2024 21:35

It looks very wet, you'd have to take a look at the other side of that wall and the rest of the house. Could just be an unfixed leak in the plumbing or some other sort of damp. Leaky plumbing would be cheapest fix. Bigger damp issues obviously more expensive.

cupcakesarelife · 30/01/2024 12:30

That looks like terrible black mould. I wouldn't even view the house 😳

Freakinfraser · 30/01/2024 12:33

I’m stunned the rest of the house looks ok when the loo is in that sort of disrepair.

sarahc336 · 30/01/2024 12:33

Clearly a leak from backof toilet into soil pipe or where the water comes into the loo. Check what's going on outside where the soil pipe if you do view

Saz12 · 30/01/2024 13:26

Could be an older toilet with an overflow thats been leaking. If so, a relatively easy fix.
Looks like the soil pipe has been boxed in.

Other than saying that toilet room needs burning and then safe disposal, it looks like the plaster has blown out. This would be highly suggestive of damp, either from external wall, rising, or some sort of plumbing disaster / mess in the past that is now fixed. Or not.
