Commuting Stamford to London liverpool street

Hi, I am looking for advice on where to live to be able to commute 2-3 times per week to London liverpool street. My primary concern is that it is a safe and nice place to live for my primary school aged kids. Private school is an option. As I don't need to commute every day I am willing to accept a longer commute. We also need to be within 30 minute drive of Peterborough for my husbands sake. Stamford seems the logical option, but maybe someone has better suggestions? Would also love to hear from people who are familiar with the commute and how they find it. Many thanks in advance!

Castor

Look at the ratings for secondary schools. My understanding is that most people go private for secondary as the state schools in Stamford are crap then.

Castor, Helpston or Bainton are worth a look as you can drive to Peterborough and they’re within the catchment of the good state secondary (Arthur Mellows).

Stamford Welland is rated Good. Clearly most cannot afford private. Lincolnshire is actually quite a poor county. There’s possibly Huntingdon. I have been a couple of times. I cannot comment on schools.

The area around Huntingdon would work well. Good line into London, and easy road to Peterborough or even train to Peterborough actually.

For schools, Hinchingbrooke has a good reputation at senior but many people go to Kimbolton for their private option. Cambridge private schools are possible if there is a bus route.

There are a number of villages around Huntingdon which you might look at budget dependent. Houghton, St Ives, the Hemingfords, Brampton.

Grantham would be better connected by trains to London than Stamford, quicker journey. 40 mins drive from Grantham to Peterborough so you’d want to live on the south side I guess. Grantham not as nice as Stamford but some lovely villages. No idea about schools, think there are grammars?

Agree Grantham is easier commute - you'd have to do Stamford to Peterborough and then to London

Stamford house prices are also crazy at the moment due to the number of people selling up in London and moving in

The girls/boys school in Stamford is now co Ed and not single sex and not for the better IMO and the fees are ridiculous now

Stamford has become a London suburb

Our friends moved back to London from Stamford! Stayed there for 20 years but they were Londoners at heart. Used local schools and dc did very well.

Thanks for all the useful replies! I wonder if st. Neots would be a better option? Private schools is an option, but I would prefer to be in a catchment area for a good school. The private school in stamford looks nice, Kimbolton I worry might be a bit of a culture clash. Would love to hear experiences/hearsay about St neots and schools.

We are very happy with Stamford School - our child joined the junior school in Y4 and started the senior school this year and absolutely loves it. The move to co-Ed hasn't had any negative impact that we can see. It's certainly a lot cheaper than Oakham, Oundle and Uppingham and about on a par with Kimbolton and The Peterborough School in terms of fees, but with much much better facilities and a very grounded ethos.

We live near Oundle (a 17 minute drive from Stamford on a good day) and I commute several times a month to London - Peterborough train station is 10-15 min drive and then 50 mins into Kings Cross. It's really easy.

We moved up from another city 10 years ago and love it round here. I also grew up in St Neots and know it well, personally I prefer Stamford.

TizerorFizz · 30/01/2024 22:57

Are Oundle and Uppingham day schools? They are recognizable boarding schools so apples and pears really.

DaveClifton · 31/01/2024 05:48

Yes, both Oundle and Uppingham admit day pupils, have done for years. Uppingham has just announced the opening of a "day boarding house" in a bid to attract even more day pupils.
