LED cable / strip lights - advice needed! Is this one for @PigletJohn?

Hi, we're having a bathroom refurb and need some electrical advice.

We want to run LED strip cable lighting in warm white up one side of a mirror, along the top and down the back. It needs to be bathroom rated (IP65?), we understand it needs some sort of a controller box and also a switch to go on the frame of the mirror. It might also need aluminium routing?? The LED strip needs to bend at a 90 degree angle twice to go around the mirror.

Is anyone on here an electrician / married to one, who might be able to suggest what it is that we need? Our electrician's not been easy to communicate with on this. And we're clueless... anyone done this and could suggest what we need / even link us to what the best products are?

Thank you!

I’d just buy a mirror with lights in it. They are automatically bathroom rated and any electrician should know how to fit one. I’ve got lights in my mirrored cupboard above the sink that come on when you put your hand under the sensor.

Thanks but the cabinetry is already ordered from a carpenter - we wanted specific solution for our space. Just need to spec the lights as the carpenter doesn't take care of this. Anyone got any suggestions?

I'd tag @PigletJohn in the text where he can actually be notified you'd like him to look at the thread.

It does not need to be IP rated unless it is within 600mm sideways of a fixed bath or shower, or above this. Some people incorrectly think that a washbasin or a WC is a bath (see pic). Some of these people are in the bathrooms business, a few are in the lamp trade.

LED light strips are usually extra low voltage. It would be quite a good idea to put the power supply ("transformer") above the ceiling in the loft, or out of sight in a cupboard though this is not obligatory. The mains power can conveniently be taken from the ceiling lamp.

LED strips are rather a temporary fitting, but once you have the wiring in place I suppose you could change them from time to time.

There is a lot more about bathrooms, for example

But your qualified electrician will be responsible for this, I do not recommend it as a DIY topic

I just bought my units from Duravit with lights in them. No idea what the rating is. I think separate lights are a faff. Why not use angled ceiling lights?

Thank you @PigletJohn - appreciate you looking at this.
