Front door colour?

We are changing our front door which is black, looking at changing the colour with the new door.

I'm going round in circles, we have a red brick surround and the house is render. I don't want anything bright (I don't think!) has to have good kerb appeal I want something timeless.

Lots of Chartwell green but not sure I like it, doesn't seem modern enough.

Would dark green be a no? What would you do?

I went with a light blue (the colour name is evading me atm!) and painted my picket fence the same colour.

My next door neighbour has the Chartwell Green, which I really like - but I've already got a sage kitchen and my hallway is sage so I didn't want any more green.

If your door is in good condition and you only want a different colour, check out the Frenchic website. Their Alfresco range is great for outdoor projects including doors.

CoffeeWithCheese · 23/01/2024 14:08

We have a mid-grey which I think works well for the classy and less likely to date factor - against a red brick Edwardian house. Next door is the same sort of blue as the previous pictures which looks quite nice too.

I would kind of like black though just to pretend I'm going through the doors of Downing Street - but I'm sad like that (and not sad enough to pay for a new door)

AbsoluteZER0 · 23/01/2024 14:13

Never forget that certain colours/designs will suit one house and not another.

I like the green colour you mentioned, OP. But IMO, the house has to have a character and bulit around the 1930's or before. Having said that it can suit nwer places but it comes down to the design/shape/looks of your place and the colours of the window frames

WildFlowerBees · 23/01/2024 14:58

It's a (new to us) new build, door needs replacing, everyone in the street has the same front door and colour pretty much. I'd like to be different but has to fit with the 'new build aesthetic' whatever that is. I've seen a dark mulberry which I like, but then there's also sage and Grey etc etc. I never knew choosing a door would be such a pain!

I love the idea of a dark mulberry @WildFlowerBees !

SwedishEdith · 23/01/2024 18:55

Is it a new door you will be getting or just painting the current one? Solidorb issued some new colours last year, a few new greens, a yellow and a brown. One of the greens - not chartwell - is really nice and fresh looking.

TizerorFizz · 23/01/2024 18:55

I also think Inchyra Blue looks good and Blue Gray for a pale blue. Skimming stone is a great neutral and Studio Green would be classy. Lots of grey doors in London with chrome fittings. Always looks smart. The F&B site has lots of photos.

cadentiasidera · 23/01/2024 19:27

We also have a light blue which I love, it was called pigeon blue on the site we used.

Anything but horrid grey.

What about teal?

A bright pink to cheer everyone up on a grey day

AbsoluteZER0 · 23/01/2024 20:18

Ok. like I said, a colour on a door and design may suit one property but not another.

Are you able to post a link to hosues similar to yours, not your place but simialr type houses?

minipie · 23/01/2024 20:19

Anything in the teal, sage, or navy families will work with red brick. I like Pp suggestion of Inchyra Blue (more of a teal).

Yellow?

AndyPandyismyhero · 23/01/2024 20:40

I agree with pp that a lot will depend on the style of the house. We live in a typical 1930's mid terrace. For us, the Chartwell green is a good fit with a door style that is sympathetic to the type of house we have. You say most doors near you are black - are there any that are different? If so, are there any colours you really like? Personally, I don't like the darker green shades and wasn't keen on the blues that were available from the company we used. If i’d not had the Chartwell green, I would have gone for the poppy red.

TheUltima · 23/01/2024 20:45

We have chartwell green and I love it. We have sandstone bricks and I think it goes really well together.

SwedishEdith · 23/01/2024 21:19

These are the Solidor new colours. I think the Forest Green is lovely. I'm not pushing them, just have been going round in circles for years trying to agree what front door to have. Think that's Pistachio showing in the link. FG is a bit more subtle.

Four new door colours inspired by the natural world around us, Truffle Brown, Pistachio, Forest Green and Buttercup offer homeowners the choice of subtle, earthy tones or a pop of yellow for those that want their home to stand out.

I think we've sort of decided we might go for sage, it'll go well with the render and brick (I hope) I did love that dark mulberry though but we thought maybe we should be totally different from the rest of the street.

Pic off the interweb but colour is the same.

you would be amazed at how many front door pictures have a dog in them. They clearly do sell paint - still!

clickifyouwanna · 24/01/2024 05:23

I think the most important thing is that the door matches the house - I see so many houses where the tone/colour of the door sticks out and not in a good way. I love brightly coloured doors but if the don’t match the tone of their surroundings it will never look good.

AbsoluteZER0 · 24/01/2024 09:31

looks good, op

Sorry to hijack but can anyone on here tell me if you can paint an existing white pvc door?
id love to update our back door but wasn’t certain you could paint plastic?

Clarabellawilliamson · 24/01/2024 09:46

I spent AGES going round in circles last year, and in the end went with Bancha green from farrow and ball (colour matched to a different brand). It's only paint though, you can always change your mind again!

It went well with my 1930s house and looks classic but not boring. I've tried to attach a photo but it's not working I don't think?

Frizzwald · 24/01/2024 10:32

I prefer the door to stand out so I'd go for the mulberry from your choices. If it was my house I'd probably go for bright pink or yellow though, I'm not subtle!!

It’s a love colour colour sage! Never tire of it. Although there is a house near me painted a gorgeous blue, maybe airforce blue and blue is not my favourite colour.
