Sockets in kitchen

Sockets above worktop - how many should I go for?

Tiny worktop area (ca1100mm width)

Two double sockets or three double sockets?

Have two double sockets in larder for coffee machine, milk frother, toaster, nutribullet

I need to plug in radio, maybe a task lamp, my phone (....I know!! Shouldn't charge it there but I will if I'm honest haha)

I cook a lot...

I often use Kitchen Aid, blender, etc

TIA

Kettle? Mini chopper? Stick blender? I went for double sockets everywhere . And i also had doubles inside a gadget cupboad for coffee grinder, mini chopper, large multi processor, plus a separate goblet blender.

I don' have a kettle (boiling tap instead)

We went for 2 double sockets on smallish worktop and really wish we had gone for 3. Constantly plugging and unplugging toaster hand blender etc.

I find with kitchens that too many is better than too few.

Also, you could get sockets with in built USB charge ports for you gadgets to save 3 pin socket spaces for appliances.

I charge my phone & plug in the radio away from the food prep area.

I use kettle, toaster, microwave, spare socket for stick blender etc. So 4 sockets minimum.

I have six sockets but have never used them all at the same time.

We have 4 double sockets on the worktops, all with additional USB ports (2 per socket). It's brilliant, as it doesn't matter where we are in the kitchen, we can plug things in. We also have a double behind the fridge and one above the oven for goodness knows what reason!

dastidlydaschel · 23/01/2024 11:26

Get sockets with usb ports, loads of random things need usb ports and it doubles the socket availability.
We went for standard usb ports and bought a packet of adapters for stuff that need usb c ports (phone / watch chargers mainly).
I'd go for 2 more sockets than you think you need!

Thanks all, ok more is more!! Noted re USB ports, I was wondering if that's useful as I've never had any such sockets apart from in hotel rooms! But you're right a lot of items require USB charging.. forgot about that!

PS No kettle planned, as hot water tap will be installed.. but you never know of course!

Ah yes thanks @SiobhanSharpe I forgot about the grinder..! Will definitely go for the three double sockets plus two double inside larder Grin

We have multiple plugs with USB points and the ones in the kitchen get used most funnily enough!

Always go for more sockets. :)

We moved into a new house with a lovely kitchen last year.

There is a large, central island with a breakfast bar at the end.

I have only recently discovered that there are 4 sockets, each with a USB port hidden under the breakfast bar!

Yes I do clean the floor regularly(ish), but it is only recently that I had occasion to be down on my hands and knees at that end of the kitchen.

It was a nice surprise, and more than compensated for the copious amounts of runny yoghurt which had been flung everywhere by a GC!

The cost of extra sockets in a kitchen is almost nothing, unless you're having them put on a completely different wall.

The daily inconvenience of not having a free socket where you need it is huge.

Don't base it on your needs now. Think back 10 years, how many sockets did you need then? How many do you need now? How many might you need in another 10 years, when there are gadgets that don't exist now but have become must haves?

While you're at it, consider having a socket installed inside the back of a kitchen unit so that you can have a charging drawer. It will keep your tiny worktop area free.
