Heater for a narrow fireplace

Would really appreciate any guidance this.

Problem: We are in an old Victorian house and the radiator (place against outside wall under window) struggles to heat the whole room efficiently. Before we consider adding another radiator in the room we wanted to explore whether there's a way to install a standalone heating device (ideally electric) in our existing fireplace space.

We've previously used a small tray-style bioethanol heater in that space, but it wasn't effective enough for the space.

It's quite a narrow space (40cm wide, 54cm up to the start of the decorative hood, 19cm front to back).

We haven't found any electric heaters that seem suitable for the space.

Any ideas welcome, thanks.

Would something like this work

Thanks Yewtown - that looks like it would likely fit the space and 1800w output is pretty good. Definitely an option for us to consider. Thanks again.

Or use it like an open fire as intended? Is the chimney lined and open?

PhilbyTalks · 25/01/2024 14:37

Hi Sanch1 - it's not lined and has been capped off. But also, we spend the majority of the day across other parts of the house - so are really just looking for a quick & easy solution to make it cosy for an hour or two in the evening.

I’ve got one of those optimyst things for the same reason.

It looks nice. But maybe a better idea would be to keep it as a show fireplace and double the radiator size if possible. This would be a lot cheaper to run.

Is your radiator single or double, because if it is a single you could double the power output without increasing the area ?

The other option might be to keep it as a show fireplace and get something like a wall mounted glass panel heater to supplement the heating.
