Does anyone else live in a truly awful looking house?

We have a 1960's ex council terraced house, my goodness it is plain! DH bought it before We moved in together, and I wouldn't have chosen it in a billion years.

But, it was a bargain, nice enough area and didn't need any work doing at all. I'm oddly fond of it now, but always seem to be apologising for it in a jokey way to visitors.

I bet you all live in droolsome Georgian townhouses, country cottages, lovely thirties semi's, or stunning new-builds, no?

My house is a total marmite house. You either love it or hate it. It is very individual looking. We love it but it does inspire quite strong opinions in folk !

I rather like 60's & 70's architecture in a retro kind of a way.

BarbaraWoodlouse · 19/03/2008 14:40

Yes, Chez Louse is a beautifully stunning new-build Georgian county cottage in the town

expatinscotland · 19/03/2008 14:41

No, it's a very beautiful house, but we are life-long renters so there's a tradeoff.

Be very happy you have your own home and no landlord will be able to drop a letter on your mate and you have two months to find a new place to live - and the potential for that to happen every six months.

Tart up your home to max and be proud and happy!

I do, too, NDP! That era is so kitschy. I love it!!!

Oh, my kindred spirits!
My house is lovely inside but truly awful from the front. It sits right on the pavement for a start and though it is early victorian it was never built to be a house. It was 4 tiny room-and-kitchen flats for weavers. It has been pebbledashed in the 80s [puke emoticon] and just looks plain odd. I also find myself apologising for it, though i do love it very much.. Oh, and the street is horrid too - run down looking.

I live in a lovely new build. Unfortunately we see right into the neighbours across the way, who cannot park their vehicles in their car port (it is doable but they are too scared) and leave their cars on the pavement. The other neighbour leaves their bin out all the time, so that's another bonny thing to be looking at as I type.

We had a 70s house that most of our friends thought was hideous on the outside and lovely and pacious and light inside.w edid a lot of work on it and eventually sold it to a young couple from london who thought it was retro!

chickytwotimes · 19/03/2008 14:45

True expat. I often moan abou tmy house then remember how lucky i am.

NomDePlume · 19/03/2008 14:47

The rooms in 60's and 70's houses are often so big and light what with the trend towards big picture windows at the time.

SueW · 19/03/2008 14:47

I live in a house that's in this style

I hated it on sight. I don't particularly like the internal set-up either. When we bought it, we asked the solicitor if there was anything in the deeds to stop us knocking it down and building something else.

But it's home. And it's mostly ours.

TheDevilEatsNestle · 19/03/2008 14:47

We are in a Georgian terrace, but I drool over a detached art deco house around the corner. They have a lovely puppy too.

Fimbo · 19/03/2008 14:48

There are loads of houses of that type in my village Sue!

NomDePlume · 19/03/2008 14:49

My BIL2 & SIL live in a 60's 3 storey house that looks kind of like a brutal maisonette block. The plot is massive and it is in a fab location. Ugly on the outside but an enviable location with plenty of space.

Furball · 19/03/2008 14:49

We live in a 60's square box, not appealing at all. to look at from the front. Infact all the other houses in the street built at the same time have so much character apart from out box.

But - once you are inside looking out the back the garden and the view beyond is amazing, truely fantastic.

expatinscotland · 19/03/2008 14:50

We live in a very beautiful Victorian.

But it is cold.

More modern homes don't tend to be so cold.

Another bonus.

chickytwotimes · 19/03/2008 14:51

Oi! You lot living in nice looking houses! Gerouravit! Stop flaunting your asthetically superior abodes.

TheFallenMadonna · 19/03/2008 14:53

I live in a very dull 1970s box. But I don't have to look at the outside that much

TheDevilEatsNestle · 19/03/2008 15:00

There are cons to my house. We had to apply to the council to put a window box in and they refused. I had a real tantrum about that.

And the windows are seriously draughty.

HairyToe · 19/03/2008 15:01

Very dull 1980's box - had vague ideas when we moved in about tarting up the front with a climber (plant not extreme-sports enthusiast) but crap at horticulture so have only so far managed a pot plant in the downstairs loo window.

I live in a town with a conservation area where lots of people I know live in 'lovely characterful' period cottages and the like so always feel the need to apologise for mine. Although inside its beautifully light and spacious (unlike the older properties we looked at) is on a very quiet residential crescent with ample space for parking (unlike the older properties we looked at which are all in town either on tiny crowded old streets or on busy main roads) and was very cheap (unlike...etc.).
