New house blues

I've been desperate to move from the place I moved to when dc1 was born and after 12 years I finally have. We went from a new build to an older house and I'm sitting here now (moving day) freezing, surrounded by boxes and crying that ds is at his last day at his lovely nursery. I know we are doing to right thing and it's just new house blues but can you all reassure me please?

I adored my house before I moved in and then spent a good week wondering what we had done. I’d only seen it once as we moved during covid.

I love my house now. There are bits I don’t love but I couldn’t have afforded the house if it didn’t have some comprises.

Give it some time. Did you really want to buy it or was it the best option at the time?

You have spent last 12 years of your life “desperate to move”??!

At this point, any change must be a good thing! It will come together

Your new home is unfamiliar. Try to remember why you moved. Probably to give your family a better life ie more space.

It'll take a bit of time. It's bound to feel strange now, you've not even spent a single night there.

Once you've unpacked all your things and got used to it, you'll feel better. Maybe there are things you want to do to improve the new house - have fun planning them until you can get them done. And remember what it was about this house that made you go for it.

Thanks everyone. I do feel a bit better this morning. I absolutely love the house, it's so much bigger than our old house and I'm excited to get to know my new area. Ds has had to leave his fantastic nursery so I think I was just feeling emotional from that.

Still freezing though! We've had the heating on 20 hours straight and the temperature downstairs is 13.5! We aren't used to this as our old house wouldn't ever go below 16.5 without the heating kicking in.

We went from a new build to an old house and the temperature yesterday morning was 10degrees! We have electric heaters in the bedrooms- it is what it is. We wear thermals at all times and are fully dressed in bed 😂😂 the house pays us back in the summer months by keeping us cool so it all balances out. As for the little one- get them mountain warehouse thermals, a merino wool sleeping bag. Make sure you get yourself some blanket lined curtains and a dehumidifier as damp air is harder to heat. Good luck!

We moved on this same weekend 2 years ago and it was this cold. It was utterly freezing as the boiler didn't work. Now it is lovely and cozy and that time is just a nostalgic memory.

It took me 6 months to get used to our house that I now love. Moved for primary school applications a few years back and was the right move. The nursery wasn't as good as the one he left. I am still heartbroken years later when I think of when I took him to settling in at the new nursery and afterwards he asked where his old key worker and friends were. Years on we have a bigger cold admittedly old house and he's had a great school experience.

Give it time

So pleased you are feeling better this morning. It’s so hard when the weather is as cold as this. If you were in your old house you would have to leave nursery when your child was ready to start school; by moving now your child may make friends at their new nursery that they go to school with. Take care and keep us updated.

Why is it so cold? We have owned Victorian houses in the past and they don’t need to be cold though the sash windows can be draughty if not double glazed. Have you checked the thermostat is raised high enough?

It is a shock isn't it...

I went from owning a warm new-built flat where I hardly had to put the heating on to a 1930 terrace with a lot of issues that were not picked up at the survey so it has been a real challenge!

I spent a month completely depressed about it but slowly came to love my house.

Also if the house has not had the heating turned on for quite a while it will need a bit of time to get warm again in general.

I found that mine became much easier to heat after the first week of running the heating.

I found a little bit of damp on one wall but that disappeared and never came back after the house was ventilated and heated properly. The previous owners just did not care for it very well...

I would get someone to check if your thermostat and heating system are working properly.

I had mine checked and all the radiators bled and I also had to put in a new boiler (the old one was apparently almost 20 years old...).
