Urgent opinions before tomorrow needed!!

We’re in the middle of having a new kitchen fitted.

Originally we were having a two-tier island and waterfall sides on the higher breakfast bar tier. For several reasons, we dropped the two tier idea and just went with an overhang that we could use as a breakfast bar.

The island worktop is being fitted tomorrow. We have a piece of spare wood - DP leant it up against the side of the overhang and said “that’s what it would have looked like with the waterfall sides.”

Problem is, I love it. And I think I prefer it to having the more open style of overhang breakfast bar….

And yet. It would be:

a) more expensive to have the wooden waterfall sides and fuck knows we’ve spent enough already

b) a pain in the arse because I don’t have enough wood here for both waterfall sides so we’d have to wait till next week (and fitter is due to finish Friday)

c) we’d really annoy the main builder by changing our mind

d) we’d be able to seat less people at the breakfast bar if it was boxed in with the waterfall sides so it would be less functional

e) I’d probably keep walking into the side and/or corner (I’m autistic/ADHD/dyspraxic and just stupidly clumsy)

f) the waterfall edges would be square so if I do walk into it I’m more likely to bruise (regular occurrence) - the overhang with bar legs will have rounded edges so will hurt less!!

Which one would you have?

A) rounded overhang with metal bar legs

B) squared overhang with wooden waterfall sides and no bar legs

What am I missing? Any obvious pros/cons??

Photos to show the two options. The wooden waterfall and bar leg have only been added to one side as an experiment so ignore the fact it looks lopsided.

Please help me. My brain can’t work out what to do 😂🤦🏻‍♀️

(btw - this is in the modular build extension that I posted about on here before! We’re finally getting there…..)

Forgot the dimensions.

The island is about 2 metres long but only about 1.2 metres wide. That’s another concern with boxing the sides in with the wood….

I would defo go for the leg so you can use it more. Remember you'll have some nice bar stools to fill the gap.
The 'waterfall' thingy looks impractical to me and slightly awkward.

SonicAllanKey · 18/01/2024 05:27

Yep. I’d go with the leg.

Wallywobbles · 18/01/2024 05:29

Waterfall sides are functionally pointless. Not sure why you like them.

Ilovegoldies · 18/01/2024 05:33

I really don't like the waterfall effect. It's your home though.

Shwighty1 · 18/01/2024 05:33

I’d go with the leg, if you don’t like the look of it change it, it could be a wooden column, a thin shelf, a round wooden leg with the same look. The practicality is what will win in the future, plus with chairs under it, the look will change again

iwantabreakfastpantry · 18/01/2024 05:36

I voted for legs.
The waterfall effect looks too busy/chunky to me.

PickledPurplePickle · 18/01/2024 05:47

Legs for me, waterfall will be in the way

Yonjovi · 18/01/2024 05:52

Go with the metal legs. It's more practical. To be honest I think the wooden waterfall thing looks very odd. I don't like it.

ApolloandDaphne · 18/01/2024 05:58

I would go with the leg. It gives a more open airy feel. Also with the waterfall one it will be harder to vacuum/mop and all manner of detritus will end up in the corners.

Smerk · 18/01/2024 06:37

Legs! Our island is our most used space when socialising and with the sides on you can't fit anyone at the island?

Toooldtoworry · 18/01/2024 06:41

My eyes say waterfall but my pragmatic head say leg. Once you get chairs in you won't notice.

Lucia574 · 18/01/2024 06:45

Definitely the leg. Makes the island a more comfortable and social space. I also think it looks better.

MaggieFS · 18/01/2024 06:49

Waterfall looks weird.

Leg if you have to.

Ideally nothing, and it's just overhang? Much cleaner look.

MaggieFS · 18/01/2024 06:50

That particular leg colour doesn't seem to match anything else in there. Looks like you have a black range and black window frames?

User69371527 · 18/01/2024 06:52

To me personally the waterfall side looks weird and “too much”. Much prefer the aesthetic of the leg with its openness and gives the illusion of a bigger room.
Also if it’s actual wood then I would fear over time the top will go a different colour to the sides.

FurballFrenzy · 18/01/2024 06:54

Legs all the way! You’ll regret the waterfall within about a week when you realise how much less functional that area is when it’s boxed in.

Also not keen on the waterfall look but that’s just a personal preference.

Doingmybest12 · 18/01/2024 06:56

How many people do you need to seat at the island. I'd put the waterfall bit on the short end with seats on each side. It will look neater, you can tuck seats right under when not used and it will look more finished to me as the overhang looks big to me and a bit unsupported with just a leg or legs .

GreatGateauxsby · 18/01/2024 06:58

I wouldn't care about builder being annoyed extra time or dollar.

Kitchens are like puppies... they are forever. So it's got to be right

The wood is lovely BUT open design is way more airy, functional/practical and better imo.

I would see if you can get a different leg... A wood one would look 😍🤩😍🤩

Also I've been burned by "injuring aesthetics" before my DH and I got this gorgeous stupid fucking bed that had incredibly sharp ends. I kept walking into it even when we moved it.
I eventually cracked and we sold it but
I have permanently broken veins from repeatedly banging my shin into it.
This happened in my early 30s not 70s. 😑

I'd probably want an end the same colour as the kitchen, not as the work top.

mumda · 18/01/2024 07:01

Don't have the sides. You will pour beetroot juice all down it in the first week and it'll never look nice.

It looks and works better with the leg.

Nestofwalnuts · 18/01/2024 07:02

Leg not sides. You can tuck stools in if used as a breakfast bar. Or keep the bin under there or veg basket stack. The sides will get in the way

Russoooooo · 18/01/2024 07:03

Definitely the leg, but does it have to be that chrome colour? Couldn’t you have a ‘trendier’ leg? Squared off to match the rest of the kitchen? Or wooden to match the surface?

GreatGateauxsby · 18/01/2024 07:04

In terms of the leg I'd Def do a wooden onepainted to match the units something like this or this

Have one waterfall side and the other rounded. That breakfast bar will be far too crowded with two.
