Big furniture when moving

This might be a v basic question, but it kept me up last night wondering how on earth they'd get our master bed down two small flights of stairs and into a van intact and with no damage to house when we move. Do people just end up leaving this stuff? What would you do? Never moved house where we've had big pieces of furniture to move and would like some insight. In my mind there is no way the bed would even get out of the bedroom door let alone down two flights of stairs. Would they take it apart? Pls enlighten me.

How did it get in? And yes if you have professional movers they will disassemble it. Or you will need to in advance, depending on what services you are paying for

You pay removal people to worry about that stuff for you!

The furniture got into the house, so it will come out.
You cannot just leave random bits of furniture in the house unless it's previously been agreed.

Professional movers do this day in day out, leave it to them. They usually dismantle large items like beds and re-assemble in the new house. That's my experience anyway.

copingstone · 16/01/2024 21:13

If you've employed a decent removal company they will take the bed frame apart and reassemble it in your new home.

It arrived in pieces and was assembled in the room. Moving sounds like a real pain now that I think about the logistics!

Haven't got to the stage where we have instructed/employed movers but good to know they would look after this stuff. It's a minefield in my head. Thanks for the answers, seems clear enough that professional removals figure it out!

Moved twice in recent years and used professional removers both times.
Of course they will dismantle furniture but they will charge and need to know in advance so they can include the time it takes in their quotation.
This is exactly the sort of thing they check on the survey.

Top tip. Pay extra for the packing service. Not that expensive in the grand scheme of things, but if you're already being kept up worrying about taking furniture apart, a packing service will be very helpful for your stress levels.

Flubadubba · 16/01/2024 21:26

Agree on the packing service. Also check whether dismantling furniture (and putting it back together!) are included- in my experience last year, it varied greatly.

Twiglets1 · 16/01/2024 21:49

Agree on the packing service too. It saves such a lot of stress and they are wonderful how they manage to disassemble and reassemble furniture without much fuss.

TempleOfBloom · 16/01/2024 21:51

Get a proper Removals Co, not a man and van.

They will dismantle anything that needs it, put your beds back together at the other end, supply temporary cardboard wardrobes, supply boxes and packing materials etc, and also be properly insured.

Thank you so much for all the answers - we have a toddler too so the packing and moving service will certainly be worth it!

Good removals cost a hell of a lot of money and it makes you cry, but when moving day happens and you watch them work you realise they are worth every last penny. The speed and skill is insane.

In the grand scheme of moving house, and all the costs involved, and extra couple of grand for packing and removals is nothing. However, the benifits are immense!
