Tv above fireplace

Anyone with a tv above a fireplace how do you find it? It will be higher than ideal but not sure if that’s something you get used to. Also do you have any recommendations for a good arm, preferably one that moves out and down.

A friend has her tv there and it drives her mad. It's only comfortable to watch when standing up. But she's nowhere to put it so it could properly be at eye level when sitting down. She literally gets a pain in her neck having to look up at it.

Our tv was above the fireplace in the old house, and we hated it. Now it's on a tv unit and much more enjoyable to watch. Was too high before

It's fine!

Depends what sort of fireplace you've got and how much you use it I suppose.

If there is a flue behind it I guess it is possible that the fixings could drill through and damage it if you are putting in a big bracket that allows it to extend out.

If the area where the TV is gets really warm it could cause it to overheat.

Depends how far back you are sitting and the size of the TV .

We were advised to hang a 55" TV on the wall so the bottom of the TV is no more than 90cm high off the floor, sitting about 3m away.

It's fine though I'd have put it at 1m off the floor (over ruled by DH). It's fine where it is but restricts what furniture you can put against the wall under the TV IE not enough visual clearance for a high back armchair or sofa.

If it does have to go over the fireplace I wonder whether an angled bracket would make viewing more comfortable.

Don't do it. It will be too high (as you've said) which make it uncomfortable to watch. And it will look bad floating up there on the wall competing for attention with the fireplace.

Is there no where else it can go?

If you must put it there, consider getting one of those Samsung picture frame or mirror screens rather than a traditional black screen, which will be much nicer!

Thank you all! I’m renovating and I think it’s probably easier to find an alternative fireplace location than tv location. It does sound like it’s really annoying for a significant proportion of people!

Don’t suppose anyone knows if those picture frame tvs can be mounted on a moving bracket?

Mine's above the fireplace because there is nowhere else for it to go and my ceiling height is only just over 6ft so I don't have the problem of it being too high. In a more normal house I would chose another location though.

Could anyone who has a tv above a fire (wood burner if that makes a difference) tell me what height the bottom of the tv is from the ground please 🙏🏻

OP posts:

Mine is above a log burner and is 115cm from the floor, the room is 190cm high

satbythecosyfire · 15/01/2024 20:09

@Ratfinkstinkypink thanks so much that’s very helpful. Not as high as I expected!

We love having our Samsung The Frame above our fireplace - when not watching TV, it looks like an artwork. It sits flush like a painting would.
it does mean we inevitable sit lower in the sofa, I just relax and put my feet up!

Tulipvase · 16/01/2024 21:35

Mine would be about 140cm off the ground if I was to do it but if you can I’d try and find another spot. The fireplace deserves a lovely mirror/art work not a TV!

AnD I love watching TV, just love the fireplace too.
