Need to order paint asap for builder.

Cannot decide if I want to paint the ceilings darker potentially. Debate in our household ongoing..

Does anyone of you have a darker ceiling in a contrasting colour (e.g. Sky blue) with lighter walls (off white) in a Victorian house but with lower ceilings (243cm)

Does it make the room shorter and the ceiling becomes a little oppressive?

Help please..!! TIA

I don’t but I can’t see how with such low ceilings it would not make it lower and more oppressive. Lovely if you are going for that. But no way will it make it look higher or bigger.

renoparty · 12/01/2024 20:50

Yeah that's why I worry about too

Will definitely lower the ceiling if in a different colour. Some rooms are painted all in one colour, it can look amazing though.

Thanks, indeed I was thinking of having the whole room darker - which will look very cool, but will it overpower me?

Like some kind of villain? I hope not.

Just go for it, you won't know unless you try. I think it could look amazing.

Those are all high ceiling though..,

My house had a room painted all the same colour when I moved in. It was painted all white straight away. The dark ceiling made it feel like a cave.

Seaside3 · 12/01/2024 21:24

@Getthethrowonthesofa yes, but if the op wants to try it, what's the problem?
It can be repainted if they really don’t like it.

This is an interesting example:

Painting a ceiling is harder than painting a wall, and it's easier to paint colour over white than paint white over a colour

StillStuckInTheShed · 13/01/2024 00:13

I have a darker ceiling. I wanted to do it for ages and am so glad I did.

What constitutes a high ceiling?

What constitutes a high ceiling?

I’ve no idea what a standard new build ceiling height is these days, but ours (Victorian) has 13ft ceilings.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 13/01/2024 09:33

It depends on the height of your room really. If you have a very high ( 2.7m <) and narrow room, painting the ceiling and a small part at the top of the wall in a darker colour will visually bring it down.

Personally I love coloured ceilings, but in a lighter shade of the main tone, or a warm colour in a north facing room. Think carefully though, as PP has said, ceilings are the most difficult surface to change your mind about.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 13/01/2024 09:44

Sorry, I have just seen that your room is about eight foot high , so a bit higher than most modern houses. The Victorians would have divided that into three parts, with a dado rail and a picture rail. Generally the colours went from dark to light as you progressed upwards. The upper part was called the frieze , the Georgians and indeed Romans had the same decorative concept.

Do you have a cornice? A cornice makes a contrasting ceiling colour work much better , the separation makes it into an elegant transition. A ( fairly pale) sky blue would look great in this sort of scenario, although I would probably make sure the ‘off white’ was a warmer tone to balance out the blue.

We have painted ceilings in two bathrooms, one more planned. But I’m wary for larger rooms if ceilings are low. Our bedroom ceiling is lowish but large and was painted a darker off white against a lighter off white on the walls. It really lowers the ceiling so I’m planning to paint it white. It was similar downstairs, ceilings are a bit higher but painting them white really lifted the space.

I have one room I was tempted to paint all one colour but was worried I’d hate it. The thought of repainting white put me off. I hate painting ceilings.

That's insane.

Mine are 9ft but it's a 3 storey house.

@StillStuckInTheShed that looks so good!

Thank you.

Whataretalkingabout · 16/01/2024 00:20

Maybe it is cultural, but I would never seek to lower (darken) even the highest of ceilings. High ceilings are always beautiful, imo.

Citygirlypop · 16/01/2024 00:30

Ooh gosh no.it looks great on insta- well lit and styled, but it would squash me and my soul. It’s also likely to be out of fashion fairly soon.

LumiB · 16/01/2024 00:49

I woukdnt personally as it will make the room feel more smaller in height. My previous owners had put a dark red in the stairway and it just sacked all the light, always felt dark. I went to jasmine White and its much lighter and fresher now.

Why not do a dark trim on the skirting and door trim with a lighter shade on walls? Leave the ceiling alone

I mean you can go for it and repaint but since you are paying someone its alot of money to 'waste'

Puffalicious · 16/01/2024 01:19

I have darker ceilings in the living & dining rooms- 1930s house. I love them. Not particularly dark- sage green & an eau de nil- have had then for many years (17) and still love them. Will take pics in morning.

Ginmonkeyagain · 16/01/2024 09:52

Mine are white cos I hate painting ceilings and white is easier to put on.
