NW garden -Where to put shed? Incl diagram!

So this is causing TOO much debate between dh and I.

Very much important diagram attached !

Originally old shed used to be on far right side of garden, on the patio -shown as dotted lines on diagram, also where says number (1).

Our garden is NW facing, and approx 50.5 x 50.5 foot.

We have all new patio (all patio from the house at the bottom of diagram, and to the right side, are raised in line with house. From the new patio, it is just one step down to the lawn.

Our builder advised it would be a shame to put our new shed where it used to be. This is because the far right patio gets the best sun, and even in the winter, it’s where there is a little sun trap is where the old shed was.

Our builder advised why not have our new shed put on lawn, on far left. Where get least sun.
Dh agrees.
They say benefits to this is:

  • Be such a shame to put a shed on our new beautiful patio
  • Where old shed was, is where we get most sun
  • We use the patio more than lawn (even in height of summer, often takes half a day for lawn to dry)

See diagram, where x2 different shed sizes been proposed on the far left.
Either size 12x10 foot or 14x8 foot.
Our old shed was 12x10.
Dh is keen to proceed with 14x8, reason is to have narrower to save some lawn space, but to still keep large shed size.
Dh has stated we have to keep large shed (required because we do not have a garage).

Concerns I have on new shed location:

  1. See (1) on diagram. In the Spring / Summer, when we get the sun in the garden from lunchtime, will the shade from the new shed just create shade where the old shed was ?

Dh seems to think no shade will be on here. He agrees the shed will have shade to the right of the shed, but it will not hit the top right side patio, where it is raised one step.

I do not wish to have any further shade on patio. Currently due to layout of house, we have shade pretty much most of the day where diagram shows (3). I would only want new shed to be moved left of garden, IF this area (1) is still kept as a little sun trap. Otherwise I feel might as well keep shed in same location.

  1. See (2) on diagram. In the Spring / Summer, when the sun goes West (behind the shed) and we get evening sun, will our small lawn be 100% in the shade? Will the patio after next to it (by the bi-folds) be in shade too?

If the shed gets moved, the lawns depth & the patio by the bi-folds (2) on diagram, is just approx 20 feet from the shed (approx 14 foot lawn, then 6 foot patio in front of bi-fold).

Dh seems to think the new shed will not put us in the shade here (2) on diagram when we get to have West sun. He agrees there of course be some shade in front of the shed. However he feels we will still have sun on the patio & into the house, because it is raised by one step.

  1. Shed be too near to the house / garden would appear small from bi-folds. Not much lawn for our x2 small children to play.

Dh disagrees. Yes our lawn will be small, but our over all layout of outside space is good, with good large “wow” patio on right.

Builder & dh are convinced it be a shame if we build new shed onto new patio (where old shed was). They are convinced we will make most of the sun on the right. But will it really ?

Last summer I enjoyed early evening sun where bi-folds are. I understand we will have sun on patio at far right. However, because (3) area of our house is permanently in shade (due to house layout), I will miss direct sun going into where bi-folds are (which would be when sun coming in from the West in the evening).
Will the new proposed shed block this evening sun? Therefore us not getting direct sun to back of house?
Dh thinks I’m worrying unnecessarily.

These concerns I have are because of our overall garden size. For years I have lived at houses where sunlight was blocked.

I have said to Dh why don’t we just have new shed, same previous size of 12x10, put where it used to be, on far right on patio?
Yes I understand, often the shed will be in the sun … but we don’t have to deal much with the shade of it in that position.

I am concerned with by moving shed, it will cause more negatives than positives.
Dh & builder really disagree and advise the opposite.

Dh disagrees strongly.

Have I got it wrong? I hope so? As I would love it that builder & Dh have got it right.

Dh thinks if we were to put it far left, it is the best decision. His additional points of why it’s best there, are:

  • My concerns above are unnecessarily as previously explained.
  • He says we don’t use the lawn much so better to put large shed there.
  • We use patio more.
  • Really thinks we will not be losing overall direct sunlight on patios & evening sun to the house.

I just have this worry.
We need to give clear instructions to our builder … I am worried that once concrete is poured onto lawn to create new shed, it might be a mistake. I do not want more shade in my NW garden. Equally I know it will be “wow” to keep our new patios clear. I hope dh is right …

Advice please !

I haven't read all of your post as it's a bit long, but for me I want to be able to walk to my main shed without crossing grass in the winter/wet so would have it on the hard standing.

LaurieStrode · 11/01/2024 11:52

Can't you orient the shed so the14' run is along the fence?
Definitely the larger shed.

Gotalottodo · 11/01/2024 11:55

@Scampuss IF the shed is put on lawn, on the left, our builder will do a small path matching to patio, on boarder of garden. Then can always get to shed without going on lawn.

Our garden is same orientation, but a bit narrower than yours and we have our shed where your builder suggested but with the long side against left hand fence, the top right corner still gets sun even at this time of year.

Gotalottodo · 11/01/2024 12:10

@Jammymare With having the long side part of shed against left fence, what is the shade like in Spring / Summer?

Having the longest side against the left side was something we were thinking of, but I thought maybe it could create illusion of more shade?

Plus being a large shed, end of it closer to the bi-folds.

Do you find this shed shade not much when it’s the Spring-Summer?

Shade is worse this time of year because the sun is that much lower in the sky to start. Honestly in the summer there’s no shade coming south of the shed until evening. I’d say at its worst (midwinter) the top right hand corner is in shade from 3pm onwards, but as our garden is only 28ft wide you might find you don’t have that problem at all.
