Lichfield

Hi

We currently live in a really run down suburb of Birmingham and desperate to move. We have friends in Lichfield and it looks lovely when we visit. To those that live there would you recommend it? What are the good/bad areas? We have a young child so schools are important. Our budget would be around 300k and would ideally like a 3 bed.

Thoughts welcome!

Ahh I used to live in Lichfield - I love it there. I think the King Edwards is still generally considered to be the best secondary school and it has a catchment, which I think includes Boley Park. Not so sure about primary schools. It’s a lovely city though - I would love to live there again.

Thank you that's helpful!

Where are you now? Can suggest some areas as I know Brum well.

Midnightponderer · 11/01/2024 13:50

We're in Handsworth.

I see.
You could consider South Brum- I did use to live in Erdington which initially was ok but I was close to Slade road which was and still is notorious. I live in the South now but revisit Birmingham frequently for family/friends and was shocked recently when I went to visit some old neighbours.

if I was choosing Birmingham now with your budget I would go for Stirchley/Kings Norton/Kings Heath/Bournville- lovely streets with a good community. You may be able to even stretch to Moseley. Generally now I would avoid North Brum. You could consider nicer parts of Wolverhampton like Penn and Tetenhall for Wolverhampton girls high school. Otherwise Lichfield I have heard good things about.

It might be worth considering Worcester as well? Another small cathedral city without the big city problems. Train line to Birmingham if you need to remain close .

Midnightponderer · 11/01/2024 16:57

Thank you for the suggestions. I am going to look into them further.

There’s a lovely couple of villages 15 minutes down the A38 from Lichfield. Put in Barton Under Needwood on Rightmove and search within a couple of miles

A bit soulless but how about Redditch? The schools are OK but £300k will go far there. Also Alcester is another good one.

A bit soulless is an understatement (sorry Redditch). Alcester is lovely but not very big.

I think this will depend where you / your partner have to travel to, to work.

I wouldn't want to be traveling in to the City Centre or the QE or the University from Lichfield on a daily basis.

Paul2023 · 11/01/2024 23:31

I did some army training there in 2000, that’s a blast from the past ! Is the camp still there ? Whittington I think it’s called..

Randomly I remember seeing a tall transmitter in the distance , when we were training, sorry random memories with no help there !

The4teddybears · 11/01/2024 23:38

Lichfield is lovely.
Lovely centre with shops and coffee shops , great weekly small market.
We often go for a walk around the town , cathedral , park and lake and look at the old buildings.

A big new housing estate has just been build which some older residents aren’t happy about.

It’s a very popular place to live .

Blughbablugh · 12/01/2024 00:12

I moved to Lichfield 10 years ago from Birmingham and have never looked back. In my opinion a great place to live, especially with young children. Schools are really good here. The primary schools especially. You should just about get a 3 bed for £300k but house prices are rising as everywhere I guess. In terms of good / bad areas, if you ask the locals then they will tell you the 'bad' areas but believe me they are not that bad at all really, especially compared to a big city like Birmingham.

LadyWiddiothethird · 12/01/2024 00:38

I live just outside Lichfield in Fradley.Property here is cheaper than in the City. There are new houses being built and the area has a lot of people who have moved from North Birmingham.£300,000 would get you a nice 3 bedroom.A new primary school has been built as well as the original village primary.Secondary aged children go to the schools in Lichfield or John Taylor in Barton under Needwood.

Lichfield has 2 stations,East Midlands and Birmingham airports are both about 30minutes away.

I moved here from Sutton Coldfield and have never regretted it.

As far as I know the Dimbles in Lichfield is the only area to a avoid, even that is not that bad.

Take a look at Rightmove.

The Dimbles really isn't that bad as bad places go. That opinion usually comes from people who have never even been near there because they be heard its bad. To be honest you get a lot more for your money in the Dimbles, bigger houses with good parkinh and an easy walk in to the centre of Lichfield plus very good schools.

Hi I would recommend Lichfield having lived here since moving from Sandwell. Basically all the primary and secondary schools are good, nice small town feel, good amenities and on cross city line and main line to London. Only downside is pricey, bit quiet for teenagers and our appalling idiot of an MO (Michael Fabricant).

Pedestriancrossing · 12/01/2024 10:00

MP not MO....

It’s a dump but I wont derail the thread.

NearlyHeadlessNick · 12/01/2024 23:02

@Midnightponderer would definitely recommend Lichfield. Lots of excellent primary schools, loads to do for both children and adults, lovely sights, great secondary schools, really close to places like Cannock chase. There's investment going on into natural spaces - the canal development, the cycleway to chase water etc.
Join us! There's loads of development going on.

Mathsbabe · 13/01/2024 11:57

I live in Lichfield. My children went to King Edward's and one went to The Friary for sixth form. I thought that both school were really good. There is plenty going on here and it is a good place to live.

misseckleburg · 13/01/2024 14:32

We moved to Lichfield from Birmingham five years ago and it is by far the best thing we've ever done. It's a beautiful town with lots to do. Lots of festivals and places to eat and drink. My husband and I both work in Brum but Lichfield feels like a little haven.
