What kind of trade would shorten the chain on a light?

I bought a large brass chandelier but at 1m the chain is waaaaaay too long. It has thick brass links with no obvious point to pull it apart with pliers. I assume an electrician wouldn't have the tools to shorten it (correct me if I'm wrong, I'm clueless!). What kind of tradesman could shorten the chain before I get it installed?

My electrician would do that as part of the job to hang it.

You need a tool called a bolt cutter, but I agree, an electrician would hang it and shorten the chain.

Top right of your picture is a figure of eight shaped link.
that could be heated up and then opened to free the chain that connects to it.
cut out the links that are not required then put the chain back in place in the figure of eight link, heated up again and bent back to retain the chain.

an electrician for sure but one with a blow torch.

Why not just lower the floor by a metre?

DontGetMeStartedOnThat · 08/01/2024 09:10

Could a saw be used through a couple of he links?

cristokitty · 08/01/2024 09:43

Thank you all! I'll send an enquiry to an electrician and hope they have a blowtorch 🤣. I didn't want to look silly if it turned out that's not the kind of thing they do. I bought it on a complete whim yesterday and then realised it could be a big job.

You might be able to wire some of the links together.

Winnading · 08/01/2024 10:54

I know you can buy S hooks and put a few links on each. To make it look better, several S hooks for two links. Can buy the same colour and size as the chain and they wont be noticeable

NonmagicMike · 08/01/2024 11:06

Might be quicker to source a new chain. The internet must be able to match that through a google search. Otherwise, a more rough and ready approach would be to cut out and make good the links not required. Any tradesman should have the required equipment - small metal hack saw / dremel grinder disc / blowtorch.

Cotswoldbee · 08/01/2024 11:11

The electrician will just cut the links out with a hacksaw, the work of a couple of minutes and certainly nothing to worry about as this type of light fitting always comes with a long chain.

Diyextension · 08/01/2024 11:54

You don’t need a blowtorch to open the split link 😂 2 pairs of grips / pliers and a bit of a twist will open it enough to remove any links you need . As others have said dremel or hacksaw will get the links off. Or again 2 pairs or grips and you can snap them off. Blowtorch. 🤣

Our electrician did that....
