Is self levelling compound the right thing to use?

We hade a fireplace to remove and need to fill the hole on the floor now the chimney breast has been bricked up

Do we use self-levelling compound or sand and cement? & if we use the compound which one (looking at Wickes and there are quite a few)

However quite often there is no dpc under hearths as the heat from the fireplace was used to dry out any moisture. The cement won’t be able to move if within a dpc as it will be surrounded by the existing material. I can see what you’re saying and yes, may be over engineering, but it’s what I would do to be safe incase there is no dpc under the old hearth. There certainly wasn’t with mine when I dug it out, but I installed a joist so no contact with the earth exposed underneath.

I did a layer of pva let it dry then filled to within 5mm of the top we will monitor it for a bit and do a final fill if the carpet guy wants us to
