Looking to move towards Beaconsfield/Surrey Cobham direction

Hey guys so this is going to be very different to the usual questions because I actually don't have children / I know I'm sorry but I have been reading the posts on here for years and it's to good and informative not to get in on the action

So schools and commuting for work mean nothing

So first question would be how safe are these places my partner had a rough upbringing he grew up in the care system from 4 to 18 he had been moved over 300+ times after he hit 18 he was Street homeless for 2 years he has been the victim of all kinds of abuse including knife crime

So chavs hanging around drunks etc fighting on the high street police sirens none stop neighbours arguing etc council estate vibes kids hanging around outside the shops asbo kids etc are no goes is he able to walk down the street with a nice watch on without someone robbing it can you sit down at the local coffee shop and enjoy the birds tweeting rather then someone. Sat across with the hands down the pants or wearing a blacked out winter coat in the middle of summer or the smell of weed blowing over you or a drug deal going on?

Second question we are quite people the home we are pretty set on is on gregories road but we do not come from money at all actually we are about as common as they come both grew up on council estates both worked warehouse jobs we don't have that how to explain it? Upper class language down or attitude

We just want somewhere super safe close to the airport and able to commute to London for shopping and food days out would be nice if the high street had some good stores also if either town has personal trainers people could recommend thats fantastic dog friendly

The reason I'm concerned is that Beaconsfields crime rate is quite high and the main crime is violent or sexual offences

Beaconsfield is dead nice, but out of our price range, especially Gregories Road.
I'm surprised that the crime rate is considered high, it doesn't strike me as dodgy

CrikeyMajikey · 06/01/2024 03:54

Gosh, your poor DP moving 300+ times, that must be about every 2 weeks.

Beaconsfield is lovely but probably very boring if you don’t have kids.

Katrina2024 · 06/01/2024 04:51

We are looking for boring because of his past he's very much a stay at home/village kind of person we are fairly young he is 28 and I'm 37 so we want to be able to travel in to London for fun days etc and well he was born in greater Manchester and there system is pretty much throw them where there's a bed for the night so it was constantly on the move not as bad as every two weeks but for a long part of it every month or 2 he was on the move

He's really struggled with well in a sense how to be a adult a man as he says moving so much he's never had like a man in his life to teach him to shave or how to look after a family etc etc

He always says the only thing I do know is I want us to have a good life where we are genuinely happy where at least in someway I can live my life knowing I did my best and now that he has come in to this money (actually from a foster family he had) he can do that

So yeah he's really set on that village type town/market town on he seams really taken with Beaconsfield he just wants to make sure it's the right move

OP posts:
Katrina2024 · 06/01/2024 04:56

Yeah it was confusing me when we first found the town you here the story its where the rich go when they don't want to live in London keeping up with the Joneses etc (doesn't bother me or partner btw) we are very much you do you we do us as long as you respect us regardless of skin race class religion or creed we will do the same kind of people but at the same time crime on the statistics says it's low but then at the same time say Beaconsfield is in the top 10 most dangerous towns in Buckinghamshire and that violence and sexual assault are the highest crimes

OP posts:
Flubadubba · 06/01/2024 08:36

Tbh, i wpuld look at the crime rate relative to the rest of the country. Bucks is an odd county- there are a lot of rural areas, so it may be high in comparison to somewhere like that, just by virtue that it's more populated.

My guess is that the list you are looking for has a lot of the more populated areas in Bucks- eg High Wycombe, Aylesbury etc and none of the more rural ones.

Flubadubba · 06/01/2024 08:38

Btw: I see you mention Surrey. There are lots of market towns with low crime in Surrey/W Dussex/Hants that are a relatively easy journey into London.

Where to suggest very much depends on your budget- some of them have thriving towns with a ton of restaurants etc :)

Katrina2024 · 06/01/2024 09:08

hey yeah we have been looking at Beaconsfield for a long while we have been watching crime statistics for a while as security is our biggest concern and Beaconsfield is 71 crimes per 1,000 people and Beaconsfield is among the top 20 most dangerous small towns in Buckinghamshire, and is the 35th most dangerous overall out of Buckinghamshire's 216 towns

to put it into perspective the national crime rate is 75.88 per 1,000 people in 2022–2023

it shocks me because this is meant to be one of the most desirable places in the whole UK and for such a tiny village to have almost the same crime rate per 1k people as the entire UK scares me

but its so contradicting because everything I have seen on here or other places when searching about the town is its very gentle and peaceful commuter families very keeping up with the joneses type situation

as for surrey and budgets well we are looking to purchase and on the purchase alone we really don't want to go above 10-15

OP posts:
BruceAndNosh · 06/01/2024 09:17

Budget of 10-15 what? Pounds? Million? Or price per sq metre?

Snowflake760 · 06/01/2024 09:27

Ah .. if you look at this map , I think you’ll probably find that the definition of ‘Beaconsfield’ includes the services on the M40

TizerorFizz · 06/01/2024 09:49

Beaconsfield?? Crime ridden? It really is not! I’d probably go for a village but Beaconsfield has some lovely roads and good transport links. Villages in the Chilterns are sought after. I do know the area well so can advise. I’m assuming you have ££££ millions of you like Gregories Road!

bobisbored · 06/01/2024 09:55

I live in a small village just outside Cobham. It's very quiet and safe. I moved to the area from the North. I am very much from a working class background. There are plenty of "posh" folk here but lots of just normal folk too. Feel free to ask anything.

Flubadubba · 06/01/2024 10:00

OP, you'll need to be clearer about your budget :)

decisionssmecisions · 06/01/2024 10:00

People definitely smoke weed in Surrey & put their hands in their pants. Others feel the cold so you may see a black coat in the summer, is that the same as blacked out? I don’t think you can guarantee that an expensive watch won’t get robbed anywhere. What’s wrong with someone tweeting?

Flamango · 06/01/2024 10:12

Cobham and esher both might fit the bill too, even Surbiton. Safe, clean, pleasant, reasonable shops, decent train links etc. No sense of ag, just mainly nice people getting on with their productive lives. Or Englefield Green?
DHs uncle used to live adjacent to Gregories Rd, it’s all lovely and peaceful there. There’s the other bit of beaconsfield, towards the proper high street and beyond that seems slightly more rough and ready but I’m sure still very lovely.
Sunday Times best places to live might be worth a look for you.

MPF080619 · 06/01/2024 10:43

What about Amersham and specifically Old Amersham - you've got the tube and mainline for getting into London and old Amersham is gorgeous and very sedate and safe. You won't get the new build you get in Gregories Road in Beaconsfield of course but you have lovely restaurants and posh shops within walking distance but quieter than Beaconsfield.

TheNoonBell · 06/01/2024 10:43

Have a look at Twyford and nearby sleepy Hurst.

Katrina2024 · 06/01/2024 15:36

10-15m on the home sorry I wasn't more clear

OP posts:
Fretfulmum · 06/01/2024 16:18

Gregories Road is a lovely place to live. Especially if it’s further down away from the New Town. The busyness of the road closer to the high street would put me off but that may not bother you. I’ve lived around here for years and I can certainly say the crime is not as you have written. It is certainly low.

titchy · 06/01/2024 16:25

If you're spending that on a house you're gonna be burgled. Spend less and don't get burgled - unless you have umpteen kids or a WAG lifestyle to maintain what's the point. Give to charity and travel.

decisionssmecisions · 06/01/2024 17:15

Where are you living currently?

decisionssmecisions · 06/01/2024 17:15

With a 10m budget just get a property consultant

TizerorFizz · 06/01/2024 18:02

Is this a wind up? Who would ask MN for recommendations when spending that amount of money? Just get security!

Up to 15 million pounds? Is this a typo or is this just a pisstake thread?

Doesn't everyone love to read a good ol' rags to riches post Wink

TizerorFizz · 06/01/2024 18:39

@titch Fact or fiction? If you need to ask about finding a house in Beaconsfield I truly doubt you have £15m. Or worry about crime unless you are a footballers wife maybe? In which case, don’t buy tiaras or expensive jewellery!
