1930s semi home inspiration?

falafelover · 05/01/2024 10:29

Buying a 1930s semi – but can't find any home inspiration I like! When I search online, everything is either extremely Hinchy* or death by beige.

Does anyone know any Instagram accounts/bloggers with stylish decor? I do like the neutrals/wood/plants look, but interested to see stuff with a bit more character.

Thanks v much!

I'm also not a grey fan and I've been looking into this. I've found some good ideas by looking at the recently sold section on Rightmove. Same house types and layouts but different decor.

I live in a 1930’s semi. I think I’ve done a good job on it - sanded floorboards, original features, a mix of antiques and modern furniture. I can pm you some photos.

Farrow and Ball have great ideas on their “Inspiration” pages. Lots of ideas that suit any house.

I think we have to remember that time people had inherited plates vases and influenced etc from Victorian and Edwardian art and furniture

This is very sympathetic to the era, people didn't buy new they worked with prices from in the family. Dark furniture is your friend

I’m never sure about furnishing a house like it’s a museum. Houses should always show your personality. Do not get rid of period features and definitely keep the 30s kerb appeal with a door in keeping with the property. The rest of the decoration can be brought up to date with colours and objects of art that please you. You don’t have to be a slave to dark stained furniture and Knick knacks.

Ooooh thanks very much all!

Really interesting point re dark furniture, @maeveiscurious I've been wondering about this recently.

We have a 1930s house. It had been “greywashed” by the previous owners from floor to ceiling and we have been putting the character back into it!

  1. All woodwork painted white- it’s original so not in good enough condition to strip it but white is better than any “trend” and has really brightened up the house.
  2. Where we were happy with hardwood floors we have stripped and varnished the original floorboards and they look FAB. Other rooms have a very pale textured carpet which works with the house better than standard carpets.
  3. BOLD colour schemes but with neutral woodwork and carpets to balance it out! We have painted the bedroom walls (all of them not just a feature wall!) burgundy, the lounge has a navy and gold print wallpaper. Our bathroom is being done next month with dark green tiling and “traditional” fixtures and fittings in white.
  4. Leaning into original features. Having picture rails really is what allowed the bold colours to work so we replaced them in rooms where they’d been removed. We’ve made a feature of the lounge fireplace by having bespoke cabinetry either side for books etc.
  5. Not making a feature of modern tech. So our TV is stood on a cabinet in the corner, rather than where the original owners had it, hung on the wall over the fireplace. We have a huge mirror over the fireplace instead!

I also struggled to find inspo for the kind of house we had so loving some of these suggestions!

Happy decorating!
