This is where we are this morning.

I'm not feeling too stressed just yet because the mess hasn't come into the house, I expect I will when it does though 😅

@Toooldtoworry your builder looks very tidy!

@Jesusmaryjosephandtheweedon good luck! We similarly have 2-ish weeks left I think. And it will have gone over by almost a month by the time we get back in. We have to make good the rest of the house also, as big steel poles went through the walls upstairs to hold the back of the house up.

Then the dreaded clean up! I think even the rooms we blocked off are a bit dusty also. What's everyone doing for this clean? We've run out of money completely, hoping our household cleaners/vacuums will be up to the task

Jesusmaryjosephandtheweedon · 04/06/2024 07:39

@A1b2c3d4e5f6g7 I'll be doing it myself. No money left in budget to get someone in. That's why I told builder the 12th. Spend 12/13/14 cleaning and hopefully move.back in weekend 15/16.

I need my privacy back. Really starting to struggle now without it. Been in a room with my 4 year old for 5 months now. I cant pee alone at the moment. Currently in my folks 3 bed with 9 people. Storage everywhere. The sooner we move out the better for everyone's sanity.

Toooldtoworry · 04/06/2024 08:04

@A1b2c3d4e5f6g7 they appear to be so far.

Driverpicksthemusic · 04/06/2024 12:40

I’m looking into hiring an air scrubber/filter for a couple of weeks before we move back in. I promised ds1 I would, as he has quite severe OCD and brick and plaster dust are some of his triggers. A quick google seems to suggest we should be able to do it for about £95 a week, plus VAT and filters.

I’m hoping it will also help with the clean-up. If it can remove a good deal of the dust that’s swirling around then hopefully it won’t keep settling for weeks/months afterwards. Ds will be the last to move back in, so that I can try to make sure everywhere is cleaned enough for him to manage.

I was going to arrange for a post-build clean, but having read lots of reviews for local services, I honestly think I would probably be able do a better job myself.

My builders have been pretty tidy, but are struggling for space now, until we move out, so the site isn’t as tidy as it was. It’s still easily passable for us to get up and down the garden with the dog though and they’ve kept the area they’ve worked on indoors contained. I bought zip up door covers as well, which has helped.

Air scrubber sounds like a good idea I might do that too.

I have taped a dust screen with a zip door to one room which isn't being done, and the other 2 rooms are taped shut.

My kitchen will need a deep clean but I am hopeful the rest will be manageable.. it's a long time off at the moment! I have bagged up everything in the house which is left and covered everything else so fingers crossed it isn't too bad.

A1b2c3d4e5f6g7 · 05/06/2024 12:12

@Driverpicksthemusic that sounds like a great idea, as it'll hopefully stop the dust falling over the coming weeks and reduce the cleaning needed

@Jesusmaryjosephandtheweedon that does sound really tough, five months of no privacy. Sharing a room with a child isn't fun. We're the same, no money to clean, I'll do the kids bedrooms first then clean when they go to bed I reckon

We are here now ...

We are so close to the end now I.can taste it!

Kitchen island went back in on Tuesday and the stone went on it yesterday. I love it! Painter in there now prepping like mad and doing primer coat. Starting colours on Monday.

Pic of island just because its finished and we had such a trek to get here and I love if!

Looks beautiful

sickofbuilders · 06/06/2024 11:18

Looks gorgeous @Jesusmaryjosephandtheweedon - love your internal doors too - wish I’d gone for that style!

Jesusmaryjosephandtheweedon · 06/06/2024 12:20

It's really fab. Just can't wait to be done now. Thanks!

Driverpicksthemusic · 06/06/2024 13:34

@Toooldtoworry good progress and still such a tidy site!

@Jesusmaryjosephandtheweedon your kitchen is really lovely.

Our steels arrived this morning. Knock through and steels in starts next Monday! Our builder has brought in two more workers from next week, so they can really get stuck in a make progress. He thinks <<crosses everything and touches lots of wood>> that everything else will be done by the time our kitchen is delivered, then he can fit that before his holiday. So, we can -potentially - move back in after two weeks living with my IL’s as long as we don’t mind not having a working kitchen.

Meanwhile, I am packing dd’s room and had forgotten how messy teenage girls are. She’s finally agreed for me to do it while she’s at school, which is a relief, as she is ridiculously slow at it herself. Was on it all yesterday afternoon and all of this morning, but it’s still only half done.

Our fittings and decor budget has had to been revised again. New set of sample tiles arriving tomorrow. Hoping we like them as if we do it will cost the same to do both the bathroom and en-suite as it was going to cost to do just the en-suite with our original choice. We’ve gone for a completely different style, rather than having to choose a cheaper version and ending up feeling cheated.

Toooldtoworry · 06/06/2024 18:16

Exciting (so far - reserve the right to change that emotion) - bricks and sand being delivered Monday, brickie starts Tuesday.

CountryCob · 09/06/2024 00:30

I would say to people wondering about how to clean - get or borrow a Henry the hoover, there is a reason everyone has got them, the dust might really break a normal hoover. Damp cloth dusting only as otherwise it just moves around. Good luck I have done this myself and realise barely budget for decorating so cleaners beyond most. Plus when you are sick of having people in the house and looking after them it's a bonus not to have someone there to explain stuff to etc

mrssunshinexxx · 09/06/2024 03:18

I've just cancelled my cleaner for 3 weeks as she came last week and it was just pointless. I've booked her in to do double usual amount in 3 weeks time when upstairs will definitely be done so we can have a great deep clean up there then will do same downstairs when that's done
I'm quite surprised at since they've knocked through upstairs and downstairs how overwhelming I've found it all. I don't have much family support my MIL helps a little that is it. My husband works away min to Fri and I'm pregnant with our third the kids have been off the last 2 weeks for half term I feel like my shoulders are up to my ears I just need to keep pushing on as I'm desperate to get our home back to ourselves

A1b2c3d4e5f6g7 · 09/06/2024 09:23

@Jesusmaryjosephandtheweedon wow looking really good, and you've even got your countertop templated and in! What colour are you going for the kitchen?

@Driverpicksthemusic hope the tiles are lovely and you like them.

@mrssunshinexxx pregnancy and kids adds a whole different dimension. I was having the internal renovation and structural work done upstairs while heavily pregnant. Honestly having the baby here has been easier in a way. I think the exhaustion and hormones while pregnant make everything seem worse. Plus toddlers get in everything dirty, even if you say a million times not to, Good luck hope it's done soon !

mrssunshinexxx · 09/06/2024 16:13

Thanks @A1b2c3d4e5f6g7 yeah I don't enjoy pregnancy I feel so fatigued. Please cross your fingers tomorrow I need to ring carpet shop back re fitting all of upstairs and down the hall and staircase on Friday he said soonest he could do was 24th and I just said that isn't good enough it needs to be back end of next week ideally as I want it done ! ( they fucked op with carpet in first room so feel I can be pushy )
Plumber fitting en-suite mon / Tues
I'm building Ikea pax wardrobes tonight with my FIL. Then carpets will be last thing I think tomorrow night I'm going to get into bed early with laptop and start ordering some nice bits and bobs to make our bedroom lovely

Toooldtoworry · 09/06/2024 17:19

I cannot wait to start ordering nice things!

Driverpicksthemusic · 10/06/2024 08:53

Apologies for not catching up. We moved out this weekend. Most of our belongings had already gone to storage, but dh still had to take three enormous full car loads to my PIL's. We had to move all the furniture and it seemed to take ages to sort all the last little bits, plus I wanted to deep clean the cooker and fridge freezer before they were stored. Think I am going to organise a professional valet for the cooker before it's refitted though

PIL's are away for a month and it feels very odd taking over their house.

Unsurprisingly after this weekend, I am not well, so dh has taken DD to school and the last load of bits and pieces to the storage unit. Then he's going to pop in and catch up with the builder, so I am here on my own with a very confused dog who seems to be constantly searching for his best mate (PIL's dog).

Knock through and steels starts today!

Toooldtoworry · 10/06/2024 16:14

This is going to sound like a stupid question, but typically how long does it take to brick up a 3m deep x 6m wide extension (with a 2.5m gap in for doors).

AppropriateAdult · 10/06/2024 18:49

Oh it's fab, @Jesusmaryjosephandtheweedon! You must be thrilled. Can't wait until we're at that stage ourselves.

I’d say roughly a week ( 5 days ) for 1 laying ,1 labouring. Depending on the weather.

Toooldtoworry · 10/06/2024 19:37

Thanks 🤞 for dry weather then

sickofbuilders · 11/06/2024 12:36

Fucking sofa won’t go through doorway as stairs in way and can’t go through window. Just feels like everything with this house has been a fucking disaster. I’m clearly being punished for something.
