We have started our loft conversion on our 3 bed terraced home. The RSJ's went in yesterday, heard a lot of expletives whilst they were manoeuvring them 😂.
The gardens are a mess but at least indoors is dust free at moment!

mrssunshinexxx · 24/05/2024 07:13

@Driverpicksthemusic I feel so so similar last week they have knocked through upstairs and down so just walking through our house all the time they have roll and stroll down but it's filthy every where and the noise ! The 2 builders are so nice but I like my house to be quiet and private so I'm starting to struggle reckon we have 5/6 weeks to go.
Roofers finished on Wednesday so that's 6 less people here !
So much to do still and tradesmen starting to piss me off with delays

Jesusmaryjosephandtheweedon · 24/05/2024 23:07

@Driverpicksthemusic I think we all have those weeks where it's all just too much. And you just want everyone to feck off and give you space. If you genuinely can't face it then don't go but some space from the house and some fun could be a great distraction. I hope you get some sleep tonight and feel better tomorrow.

I'm really not sure how we are ending up paying this. I'm gonna let the architect fight it out. I'm tired now. He can do what he's been paid to do.

On the plus side the floor was completed today, it looks fab and I will call kitchen guys tomorrow and arrange to get kitchen back in place and painter comes next week. Then we are pretty much ready to go. Will order carpets then and we can start putting the place back together and move home!

Driverpicksthemusic · 25/05/2024 09:59

@Jesusmaryjosephandtheweedon defintely let them sort it out, they just be rectifying their own mistake at no extra cost to you. Fingers crossed that’s what happens. Good to hear it’s fixed and you can get back on track now though.

I’m not going to the festival and to be honest I am pretty sad about it, but I have to be realistic and I just can’t manage it. Dh and dd are there and it’s very muddy, so nowhere to sit down. Can’t even put out a camping chair as it will sink apparently. Today the weather is going to be good, but tomorrow is rain all day with thunder storms as well, which wouldn’t exactly help my mood. First time in 10 years they’ve had bad weather for it.

Middle dc came home yesterday afternoon as planned, although obviously not to dog sit. I have cleaned up and vacuumed everywhere I can, had a long bath, and a decent sleep and we’ve had a good old catch up and watched some of our favourite tv shows together. It was lovely this morning just to wake up naturally and not have to race the dog outside, feed him and take him back out again before the builders arrive. I have come back up to bed with a coffee and pastry, as my dc is asleep on the sofa. Feels like the first time I have relaxed even a little bit in weeks.

You hit the nail on the head. I definitely wanted the builders to just bugger off on Friday. (I was practically screaming it inside my head.) So sick of living in a dusty, messy goldfish bowl, but then there’s the conflict with wanting them to get things done as fast as possible. I did breathe a huge sigh of relief when they left last night though.

Driverpicksthemusic · 25/05/2024 10:04

@mrssunshinexxx Sounds like we are in a similar situation. Although I appreciate we are lucky we’re going to be able to move out for a few weeks soon when we house sit for my PIL’s. Dh, dd and I will be back home before the kitchen is fitted though, so more indoor camping to be done in July and I’m not mad keen in the idea of washing up in my lovely brand new bath!

I hope you can get a break this bank holiday to recharge you batteries.

Toooldtoworry · 25/05/2024 16:24

I'm not looking forward to the stress moment where I want the builder to just get finished! Ours expects to finish the extension by 19th July. Then he's away for 2 weeks before moving onto the kitchen and bathroom/utility.

newtoitalldammit · 28/05/2024 12:08

Work has halted due to the rain...annoying but will have to wait it out

Toooldtoworry · 28/05/2024 12:10

Day 1. Conservatory coming down today. Ground work starts tomorrow.

Driverpicksthemusic · 28/05/2024 21:49

@newtoitalldammit same here. Torrential rain today - not conducive to roofing. Afaik, everyone should be back on site tomorrow though. I was actually quite grateful for the peace and quiet today, even if it has put us back a day.

@Toooldtoworry So pleased you have actually got things going.

I need to get back onto the last bits of packing tomorrow. We haven’t started packing up dd’s room yet and I was hoping she was going to get stuck in this half term, but she’s been to the festival, then has a sleepover, has rehearsals for two productions and a singing exam, so it looks like it’s going to be down to me.

mrssunshinexxx · 28/05/2024 22:11

Upstairs windows in today. Our master going to be finished plasterboarding tomorrow and plan to skim the ceiling. Then Thurs / Fri skim walls and en-suite and walk in wardrobe. Then skirting then they will move to downstairs. Can't bloody wait

pashmina696 · 29/05/2024 07:27

@Jesusmaryjosephandtheweedon that sounds like a nightmare but glad it's back on track

My downstairs is now built, the construction and carpentry for upstairs is now ongoing, waiting on the roofer now starting as there has been so much rain and it's not watertight!!

Jesusmaryjosephandtheweedon · 29/05/2024 09:09

Back on track here today. Floor is back down and finished, kitchen guys are coming to finish off the kitchen. Stone guys arriving with the quartz later today, electrician coming tomorrow and painter too. Starting to come together.

Jesusmaryjosephandtheweedon · 29/05/2024 09:12

Posted too soon! Sounds like the weather has been horrific there. Its not been too bad across the water. Hopefully it dries up and you can crack on. Even when they get delayed I find that they make it up as they go so hopefully that's the case. We lost about a week but still finished around when we were supposed to. I think they build in some extra time just in case.

Hoping to move in in 2 weeks.

Driverpicksthemusic · 29/05/2024 11:22

Back on track here today too. Arrived slightly late, but en-masse and got stuck straight in. Plastering is being finished in bathroom and back bedroom and roof is progressing on the extension. It was nearly ready for tiling when the bad weather hit last week, so they have a bit of time to make up, but then it will be all systems go, as steels are arriving at the end this week.

I appear to be having a flare-up of my health condition though, so am upstairs in my mattress-on-the-floor-bed listening to the plasterer, who seems to be a one man cabaret! 😁 Having a few days break without them here seems to have helped me mentally, if not physically. We always knew a flare-up was likely with me doing such a lot of physical activity packing up the house, but it’s very bad timing and extremely frustrating. Thankfully dh is actually home today to deal with the builders.

Toooldtoworry · 29/05/2024 14:00

Day 2.

Neighbours have complained that the ground workers have vibrated a picture off the wall.

Building control have said the foundations for the old conservatory need to be dug up and deepened.

Sorry if I bleat on, but it's better to say it here than to tell next door to chuff off, especially as I've put up with their building the last few months.

Toooldtoworry · 29/05/2024 16:22

Neighbour complained that building work has started early. Stating date in PWA, there isn't one 🤣

Deep breath.

newtoitalldammit · 29/05/2024 18:27

Builders were back on it today, from what I've seen when going out to check, it seems in the last week they started to now that they are ready to put on the new roof tiles.
We chose the standard 49 rustic red tiles and are waiting for the 3 velux windows to be delivered....need the rain to stay away as we chose not to go for the tin roof scaffolding!

Driverpicksthemusic · 29/05/2024 19:39

Oh @Toooldtoworry your neighbours sound like a nightmare! When my neighbour was having their house renovated our giant wall clock fell of the kitchen wall and smashed most of my dinner service. I didn’t say a word, just used it as an excuse to buy new dishes. 😂 I told the builder about it last week, as he was commenting on the clock and he said ‘why didn’t you tell us?’. I told him there was no point, it wasn’t deliberate and there was nothing they could have done about it after the fact anyway.

Definitely come on here and vent as often as you need to. I know it has really helped me, being able to grumble here rather than at my family or the builders.

Driverpicksthemusic · 29/05/2024 19:48

We have roofing felt on half of the roof. So the existing downstairs bathroom is in darkness. It’s going on the new dining room tomorrow, which will mean lights on in the kitchen in the day from now on. Building Inspector should be coming Monday to approve everything and ok tiles going on.

Back bedroom and bathroom are all plastered, carpentry and sockets going on this week, then mist coating end of next week so we can store some furniture in there.

A week and a half till we have to be out and I’m sat here looking at all our remaining belongings thinking ‘HOW?’ We will get there though, even if it means boxing all the remaining bits up without sorting through them and just shoving them in the storage unit.

Oh and our lovely builder says he has been wrangling the material costs and thinks he is going to be able to squeeze enough out of our budget for us to afford a new front door. That would be fantastic, as the current one is so badly fitting that the hall is freezing in winter and it rains in under the threshold. We were sure we couldn’t afford to get it done, so that was lovely news this morning. I wondered why he insisted we get the window/door guy to quote, even though we’d said we couldn’t afford it. Bless him! Now I just have to get dh to agree to it being red!

Toooldtoworry · 29/05/2024 21:31

@Driverpicksthemusic thank you. Next door have given us such a hard time leading up to the build that I was hoping they'd leave us alone once started. I know this was never going to happen, so now I shall concentrate on things I'd like to do in petty revenge but won't!

newtoitalldammit · 30/05/2024 07:48

Oh my god I'm so frustrated with these builders. They aren't coming today because it might rain. Their reasoning is as they are creating the dormer frame they need it not to rain as it will all be exposed.

I feel it's a lame excuse, can anyone shed some light onto this ?

newtoitalldammit · 30/05/2024 07:50

Also, it was the builder himself who put us off getting a tin hat. Now I feel I know why. It's not even 9am and I'm already wanting to hurt him!

The last thing you want when building a dormer ( big hole in your roof ). Is for it to rain. Im not sure where you are but the forecast today here is heavy rain at times. Its just how it is with working outside some days you just cant get what you want done because of the weather. 🫤

Driverpicksthemusic · 30/05/2024 08:42

@newtoitalldammit I can understand them not wanting to do the dormer in heavy rain, but is there nothing else they could be getting on with until the weather improves? Ours generally find something else to do if weather stops them doing the scheduled work. We had it for one day this week, but they prepped woodwork at their workshop and did some work chasing suppliers and ordering bits and pieces, they were on and off the phone to us all day asking questions and double checking what we want, so they weren’t idle. They also came en-masse the next day and really powered through.

I feel for your though. It is frustrating when the weather causes hold ups, especially when you’ve reached the point that you just want your home back, and any delays just push that back even further.

mrssunshinexxx · 30/05/2024 13:38

Agree you don't want it to rain in but they could be doing many other things
