Tips about putting vinyl flooring in bathroom on my own?

I just bought this flooring to cover the old one installed by previous' owners in the bathroom. https://www.diy.com/departments/colours-vinyl-rolls-black-grey-mosaic-tile-effect-vinyl-sheet-vinyl-6m-/5059340260761_BQ.prd

Has anyone done that type of DIY and has any tips on making it as easy as possible and what products to use to best fix and seal it?

I was thinking of getting my handyman to do that but after Christmas spending I think it will give it a go! It is a small bathroom so not a huge job.

I think it would be a false economy, especially in a bathroom where you definitely don’t want water running into gaps!

I know someone who has cut and laid their own carpets for years who couldn’t manage to lay vinyl neatly. DH is also pretty competent at diy, and can turn his hand to most things, but managed to bodge flooring.

When we had kitchen vinyl laid early last year DH said about laying it over the existing vinyl and the fitter said it causes condensation and mould so insisted on the old one being ripped up.

I did it and it is ok. Only OK though. I used the old lino as a template and used bath sealer where it joined. It looks a bit cheap and DIY but it'll do.

I've done it using the old vinyl as a template and it looked great, and was still there when the next owners sold the house years later so must have been a fairly decent job.

Pick something fairly low key so that if you do have any mis-cuts it's less obvious and easier to tidy up when you silicon the edges.

Turn the heating up a bit so the vinyl is pliable - less likely to crack and more likely to be easier to handle into position

It's much more difficult than you think. Really really think and double check each cut as once it's done there's no going back.

Using the previous floor as a template is the best thing.

Buy a proper vinyl cutting tool rather than scissors.

Measure twice, cut once.

Thank you everyone for all the comments! I am a bit nervous now about doing to myself :).

I have bought the vinyl but I might wait a bit to lay it out and try to save to have the handyman do it instead.

This is my forever home and I want it to look as good as it can and it might last longer if it is installed properly...

I did it for mum’s downstairs loo and it was a false economy.

if you must, then use the old vinyl as a template and when you’re putting it in use a hairdryer to soften the edges so they are easier to tuck in to the corners or under the edges of the loo etc. Seal around the base of the loo.

but personally, never again.

KirstenBlest · 04/01/2024 08:37

Put the vinyl flat and unrolled in an unused room. to settle down.
If you are very careful you should be fine.

Thanks again everyone.

I think I will get the handyman to do the bathroom and keep an eye on how he does it.

Then I will use the rest of the roll to do the flooring in my under the stairs cupboard room & my small utility room myself :).

Honestly I'd just get a proper carpet fitter to do it. It's not that expensive.

DH is very handy at these things (think sewing a new car interior!)and having tried several times now to fit vinyl flooring now just refuses.
