What is with the mildew around here?

We moved into this house over the (hot, dry) summer - and of course knew, that there would be no real way to tell how mildewy the house would get in the (cold, damp) winter.

What's really annoying is that our window frames (UPVC, double glazed, range of ages from early 2000s to mid 2010s) get really mildewy. Even if we leave a window shut for 48 hours, or don't fully draw the blinds.

We go around regularly with Dettol M&M remover, we leave windows open at least a crack most days, we try to remember to fully draw all blinds. But it's unrelenting, even if we miss a day of cracking open a window, a day later, little black spots on the UPVC frame, or in the corners where they're sealed in.

The newer windows have tickle vents, which are left open. The general humidity in the house is average, we run a dehumidifier if we dry washing indoors. There is no sign of mildew or dampness on any of the walls/ceilings, just around the windows.

I'd love to know WHY this happens, and if there is a better solution than the on-going cycle of Dettol M&M remover, opening and closing windows, etc.

In short it’s cold air meeting warm and then condensing. You’re doing all the right things but for some reason it’s not sufficiently venting the home. Do you have the heating on a lot? Might be that passive ventilation isn’t working and you may need to consider mechanical. If so it won’t be cheap and will be messy. I’m not saying you do but you may need to take advice from someone in the trade who has the appropriate equipment to measure and provide a solution.

I’ve read that bleach products actually make the mold worse and it’s better to use white vinegar to kill it

Vinegar and methylated spirits are what kills mould. Bleach bleaches it.

Scrub with soap and water. Slosh liberally with either cheap spirit vinegar or methylated spirit. It will dry quickly and the smell goes soon, too.

I have this problem too. An ensuite now develops mildew even when the window is left open. We have stop using it as a result. I never used to have . Has anyone any idea why we would be getting it on the ceiling when using the room for showering? It never used to happen. I’ve used bleach to clean it . Is distilled vinegar going to work?

TheSandgroper · 02/01/2024 05:11

The definition of “bleach” is “make something white” either by sunshine or other chemical process, according to my Concise Oxford Dictionary just now.

Mould is a fungus so spirit (not malt) vinegar and methylated spirit kill it. Bleach kills norovirus and other gastro bugs but they are bacteria, not fungi, so it has it’s place.

Re your ceiling, I would go up into the loft and check if there are pipes up there and could there be a slow leak.

Where would I get spirit vinegar? It stops when we don’t use the shower so it’s definitely damp from the shower.

I buy mine from the jungle website in 5 ltr containers. Its great for cleaning almost everything - if you live in a hard water area particularly. Buy the lemon scented if the smell of vinegar bothers you.

OP, you need to find out how humid the air in your home is.

If it's above 50%, you need to bring it down.

I use two dehumidifiers, one for each floor of my 3 bedroom but smallish terraced house

Do you have a link please? Interested in the lemon scented version

@shamelesss scrub that (see what I did there) the site has a minimum order of £30 odd.
