Herringbone LVT floors - yay or nay?

As above really. Debating whether the current herringbone floor look is going to go out of fashion soon and am I better off with straight planks?

I don't see it going out of fashion as herringbone has been around for a very long time. Just go with what you like and what will look best for the space.

NB if cost is a consideration, fitting planks is likely to be cheaper.

Makemydaypunk · 30/12/2023 19:44

I would go for straight planks personally, the herringbone look although traditional is absolutely everywhere.

LindaDawn · 30/12/2023 20:14

We are going for straight planks in wood effect LVT cos it should be cheaper but also a carpet shop said herringbone over a large area might look too busy!! It’s for our kitchen, dinning and snug extension.

Landlubber2019 · 30/12/2023 20:17

Go for what you prefer, personally I like herringbone better.

flowergirl2020 · 30/12/2023 20:18

I've recently just had herringbone LVT done in Camaro polyflor naked blonde. I was also worried about the same issue of it potentially looking busy. We bought through our floor installer who explained certain brands offer different sized planks eg the small plans or wider longer ones. We went for the latter which thankfully works in a kitchen/dining/living extension. You can't use visualisers from some flooring companies also to help.

Katypp · 30/12/2023 20:22

I am a member of a kitchen renovation Facebook page and Every. Single. Kitchen has the following:

  1. Navy blue cupboards
  2. 3 pendant lights over an island
  3. Crittal doors
  4. Herringbone LVT floors.

I think they will all date. Especially when all used together

Arewethebadguys · 30/12/2023 20:26

Love herringbone but wouldn't get it now. Subway tiles, faux wooden panelling, herringbone floors will all date badly

I don’t think they will ‘date’ as such because they are all traditional designs which have been around for hundreds of years and will continue for hundreds more, they have just been particularly popular at this moment in time. Dated to me would be something that is not a classic design such as a feature wall in a loud and colourful modern floral print.

I was looking at Camaro poly floor naked blonde. Are you happy with the colour? Wondered if it might be a little too pale. I want quite a lot of colour variation to hide any sun fading and hide the dirt/scuff marks!,

nattynoonoo821 · 30/12/2023 21:01

We have polyfloor camero and I would not recommend it especially in areas that get natural sunlight. We've replaced two sections in 2 years and it's bubbled and lifted again. We have a sputh facing dining toom and It's also not covered by warranty. We replaced the click lvt as it did the same in the same area with the glue down but that's just as bad https://www.contractflooringjournal.co.uk/most-read/evil-under-the-sun/. I'd choose something else if there's so much as a window in the room!

@LindaDawn I was worried about the same issue but the darker option seemed a big jump in colour tone. I imagine it could look too light depending on the light/orientation of your room. Our is west/north westerly facing. It does have some darker tones in it which we have picked out in other furniture so it isn't all matchy matchy. I don't think I have any great photos of the floor as it's only recently been completely the extension- mainly shots of the kitchen Grin but I'll post a better photo in the daylight and quote your username. For now here's a photo shortly after it was laid and painting was being done. The front of the photo is about 8 feet away from a big set of bifolds to give you an idea on the light. As you can see towards the back of the room (it's an L shape) that's our darker bit (dining room)

MissAtomicBomb1 · 30/12/2023 23:37

It's a classic style and won't date in an older house, particularly in a hallway.
I'd be more wary though in a newer house, particularly as a PP said, if it's alongside a blue kitchen, pendant island etc as I think that combined overall 'look' is already dated.

it looks lovely. Maybe I need to revisit it. Have just seen a Powdered Oak in their Amtico Spacia range that I like too. Need to compare them. It’s so hard to choose when the extension isn’t finished. Mine is north facing so I need a lighter flooring rather than dark. Thanks for replying.

We have Karndean parquet tiles and I love them, have had them for 4 years now and they're aging well. We also have a navy kitchen that still looks fantastic and I don't really care if they age 'well' or 'badly', this is our home and it's how it is now that I care about. Our floor covers the entire downstairs and I love how the floor flows from one room to the next.

Mines wood not LVT, but herringbone won’t ever look dated. It’s a classic flooring type. We have it running continuously through three different rooms downstairs and the hallway. Gets lots of compliments. Go for it!

I don't think that herringbone will go out of fashion. I would just go for wooden herringbone though and of a high quality as it will look timeless.

MindHowYouGoes · 31/12/2023 09:40

I’ve got Karndean laid in herringbone all through downstairs and it’s beautiful. It does cost more though because a lot gets wasted.

I don’t think it matters if a herringbone floor, pendant lights and a dark blue kitchen might be dated in a few years because it’s also a gorgeous combination so if you like it then go for it

Katypp · 31/12/2023 10:45

@MindHowYouGoes oh I agree, go with what you like regardless of whether it's fashionable or not.
I was pointing out that herringbone is part of a 'look' at the moment so is very popular

FartNRoses · 31/12/2023 20:28

Herringbone has indeed been around for a very long time but true ‘natural feature’ herringbone (parquet flooring) are much smaller planks.
Personally, I’m not a fan of the larger planks but that’s just me.

App13 · 31/12/2023 20:45

I have herringbone but went for big planks as the area is huge...
This is wood effect porcelain but will be getting Lvt in cloakroom , seen great samples in Howdens and looks v real but durable as well.

Everything will date - trying to choose something because it's timeless can result in your room looking very dull. Go for what you love and enjoy it.
