Emerging alternative & artist communities, south england.

OH works with alternative health therapies, I am an artist/photographer. We’re wondering if there are any emerging alternative/open minded communities somewhere between Bristol and London (due to family each way).

Usual alternative hotspots in our search area are Frome, Glastonbury, Stroud, Bath, Bristol outskirts etc… but these areas have become incredibly over saturated and are now pretty exclusive/boujee when it comes to property prices and the types of people who can afford to live there. Guildford Winchester and Bath are nice but pricey however ideal distance from big cities. Salisbury is too far to London or Bristol (1.5hrs).

There must be locations at the early stage of development, on the up, with less inflation in property prices. Perhaps slightly less alternative without having to live in affordable but less interesting Swindon, Trowbridge, Portland or Yeovil etc...

2024 is a frightening time to go house hunting with a budget of around 550k for a 3+ bed house (100sqm+) with garden in the south. Must have a train station and access to green countryside, don't want to live in a big city but with train access to one. Clients are in London but have worked remote for 6-7 years already. No to Hastings, Margate, Folkestone. This direction is too far for seeing family in the West Country.

Would appreciate any advice.

Bradford on Avon? Good train lines to Bristol and London. Fair bit of alternative health stuff and pretty arty - and connected to places with more extensive scenes. Not sure it’s “emerging” tho. I’m not cool enough any more to be across emerging stuff, I suspect!

Latewinter · 30/12/2023 12:13

You want it to be artistic, emerging, alternative and open-minded but not leftist or eco-centric?

I'm just not sure that exists. I hope you find what you want, though.

BOA is on our radar, it could fit very well.

@Latewinter yes it exists. There are places which attract more than one type or more than one point of view. That’s what I’m looking for.

Hastings?

It's a bit of a mixture. Pockets of real deprivation and the town centre is a bit rough but also quirky and arty with a lovely Old Town. Similar contrasting areas as Brighton but on a smaller scale.

cariadlet · 30/12/2023 15:51

Oops! I hadn't read to the end of the op so missed that Hastings is out.

Have you considered Worcester, Gloucester or Malvern?

SomethingUniqueThisTime · 30/12/2023 16:09

Charlbury in West Oxfordshire also fits your criteria.

Curious as to why Gloucester has been mentioned a few times now but not Cheltenham?
Any insight, those who are flagging Gloucester?
Just because I'm planning a move to Cheltenham myself, and more-or-less rejected Gloucester. Also looking for strong arts community.

I may be wrong, but I’m not sure Cheltenham meets OP’s criteria of an emerging alternative artist community? It feels like a moneyed middle class shopping destination together with great restaurants and bars, and a little bit of old-school culture thrown in the mix. A bit like Guildford or Windsor.

SomeInternetUser · 30/12/2023 19:38

I am a fan of Cheltenham and Gloucester in equal measure for different reasons/vibes. Gloucester is cheaper and if you live in the suburbs/ villages on the Cheltenham side you can benefit from both places. You could also do the Bristol and Stroud thing. I have lived all over the country and worked in the arts. Cheltenham just isn’t emerging, alternative or cheap. You won’t be disappointed lots happening in both and they’re really close to each other you can live in one, work in the other etc.

SomeInternetUser · 30/12/2023 19:42

That was for @heldinadream

heldinadream · 30/12/2023 19:47

Thanks @SomethingUniqueThisTime and @SomeInternetUser helpful comments and food for thought!

hmm not read all the replies but what about gloucester or nailsworth, poundbury/dorchester, southbourne in bournemouth, cardiff - penarth/pontcanna/roath?

OhshutupDerek · 03/07/2024 20:05

Sounds like what you want does not exist.

I think mumsnet might not be the right platform for me.

Southsea is arty and vibrant with a great entrepreneurial spirit and kind of between London and Bristol technically
