I'm not sure you can paint tiles on floor, it would wear off. you could just tile over the top if it's very level, there is adhesive for this, and would look much better. Tiling is pretty easy, and there are some really cheap tiles that look like a lot more, than what they cost.

noddyholder · 17/03/2008 09:35

Tile paint doesn't really work in the long term it is better to re tile.B and q do sell it though. We are renting a flat atm with painted tiles and it is peeling and when you paint over grout you lose the tile effect aswell

DeeRiguer · 17/03/2008 10:19

would not recommend tile paint a real waste of time (this was for walls)
tiling is easy and quite satisfying to do

i would consider any other floor covering /solution but not this, sorry

WowOoo · 17/03/2008 10:22

Have been told the same and am gutted as I hate my tiles and was such an effort putting them down and will be taking them up again. I have seen peeling floor tiles - it ain't pretty.

noddyholder · 17/03/2008 18:38

Don't take them up its so much work and existing tiles are perfect surface to tile over hth

KatyMac · 18/03/2008 19:15

Maybe I will tile over them - floor paint doesn't seem such a good idea now

It could be worse, our kit floor is bare cement, someone tried to paint it but it's all come off, disgusting...bits of red and cream and grey all over. Really hard to clean.
Where do you get cheap tiles then? We're renting so don't want to invest too much...

DeeRiguer · 18/03/2008 20:31

where is the floor katymac?

you can get all sorts of tiles for flooring these days and i would agree just tile on top of existing ones

flight, dont know where to get cheapest but measure up and look for discontinued ones they'd be cheapest at b&q type emporium..

tell your landlord get them to pay for materials.. at least? it is improving their property after all..

Flight · 18/03/2008 20:34

Thanks Dee

Trouble is he refuses to do anything now as he is selling up whenever we leave, and the next person to buy it will probably refit it completely!

WendyWeber · 18/03/2008 20:38

Carpet tiles might work - the kitchen kind, with tight little loops?

They are large, rubber-backed, loose-lay; you can pick one up and swill it under a tap if necessary, or just replace (buy a few spares) when beyond cleaning.

WendyWeber · 18/03/2008 20:41

heuga.com - scroll down for lots of examples.

KatyMac · 18/03/2008 21:05

It's a utility room/staff&downstairs loo so I don't think carpet tiles are appropriate

Thanks anyway

They're very washable though, katym...

BoysOnToast · 18/03/2008 21:13

try watco.

they do industrial paints etc. i used some to paint bathroom floors (wood) and now they send me their brochures full of fascinating stuff like grip strips for decking and paint for concrete warehouse floors and stuff.

if you prep the surface well, you should egta good finish imo. sugar soap and then meths will get all trace of grease/oil off the floor. ring watco for advice.

nooka · 18/03/2008 21:28

I've just laid new vinyl down in my bathroom. Very easy to do because you just cut the edges with a knife, and cheap - I got mine from B&Q (and I carried the roll home on the tram - it's quite light stuff)

BoysOnToast · 18/03/2008 21:34

i like vinyl. theres some really nice ones. and i like the squashiness and the warmth.

WendyWeber · 18/03/2008 22:08

Yes, but, what you have to watch with sheet vinyl is corners - it's fine and dandy if you have a perfectly square room but once eg chimney breasts creep in it gets very tricky (and it is soooo easy to bend it back and then cut in the wrong direction )

nooka · 18/03/2008 22:14

I did my bathroom - so all aruound the loo and pedastal sink. I just took it very slowly - and glued it down where I went wrong! I am really pleased with how it looks. I did make sure not to choose a pattern with any right angles!

DeeRiguer · 19/03/2008 14:11

flight, that's a real shame, was in similar position once and they were keen to do the work (well, us to do it) as it would ease the sale...
i agree vinyl is luvely warm, would not go for laminate no siree
..you can get groovy textured rubber and things now too..in tile form i mean

MonkeysUncle · 22/03/2008 21:44

Remember if you tile over the top of existing tiles though that your doors may not close, or you may get a slight step from one room to the next. Not that I've ever done such a foolish thing.
