Diversity in Folkestone

Hi! I posted the following on the Facebook page 'Life after London' after seeing that many Londoners have moved to Folkestone, but only got a few likes and no replies (which may be quite telling 😊). Could anyone on Mumsnet who has moved to/lives in Folkestone comment on the following?

I have decided to visit Folkestone for a few nights with a view to finding somewhere more affordable than London as a single parent, but still with access to fun stuff to do for myself and the kids (I enjoy rollerskating, dance; kids love gymnastics and drama) plus ability to commute to London once per month. For those who have moved there, how have you found the town in terms of racial and cultural diversity (or the general 'vibe' on this)? I understand that Folkestone will not be as diverse as London, but as a mixed-race person and with primary school aged mixed-race children, I'd like to hear of people's experiences. Feel free to DM me if preferable. Also, if I should be posting elsewhere on Mumsnet, let me know!

Thank you so much.

I’ve just moved from Kent and my DH is originally from Folkestone. Kent generally is not racially diverse with the exception of North Kent/Medway. That said, there is a sizeable Gurkha community in Folkestone as it has military bases.

I am white so don’t have lived experience but I’ve looked into the demographics there as I worked in education with a remit to increase diversity and inclusivity in youth programmes.

Also in terms of DFLs somewhere like Margate has had a much bigger influx from London. Folkestone keeps being talked about as the next big DFL town but it hasn’t really happened.

Finally, in my opinion, it isn’t a very nice place. (Sorry.)

Broadstairs, Canterbury or Ashford are all nicer towns.

I grew up on the South Kent coast (moved to London over 20 years ago) and whilst I love it I am realistic about it.

It wasn't and still isn't very racially diverse. My primary school was all white and secondary school there were a small handful of pupils of South Asian and Chinese/Vietnamese descent. To my memory it was very very rare to see anyone with African Carribean heritage at all. It has improved, but there may still be some attitudes that would be a shock to someone born and brought up in London.

Something else to consider is the coastal towns (Margate, Ramsgate, Dover, Deal Folkestone etc.. ) are not that well off - there is a lot of social deprivation in Thanet particularly. Better off people moving down from London can be resented a little.

Thank you @Ginmonkeyagain , this is so useful. My question is pretty much answered now! 😊
