Shed size?

12 replies

We are hoping to put a shed/workshop in the garden. We were looking at a wooden one that was about 8ft by 14ft. It’s to replace our integral garage which was 8.5 by 17ft so it will be a bit smaller than the space we had previously. I’m just wondering if anyone has a photo of a shed that size? I am worried it won’t be big enough and it is hard to know just by looking at an empty one in a garden centre!

Thank you in advance!

no photos, but one way is to use a tape measure in the garden and do the outline then add in items youll use in it,

What do you store in your shed? 8 x 14 seems quite large still. My husband runs a business out-of one about that size!

Garden tools mostly and a fairly decent sized table saw. It’s to be a bit of a workshop as well as for storage (hubby likes sawing bits of wood 😂) I didn’t want it to be much smaller than our garage as he is used to that space. I am glad you are saying that is a good size.

basically to fit those items, youll need a bigger shed than the one you have in mind.

Yeah, that’s what I was unsure of. Our garage was 8.5ft by 17ft so I thought 8 by 14 might be a wee bit short. Might have to go up to 8ft by 16ft, the next size up. I will get the measuring tape out tomorrow!

based on experience of shed sizes etc hope it helps, a friend had a lovley custom 50ftx20ft now that was or would of been an excellent workshop type shed.

Try to make a scale model of your garden and shed on squared paper. We do this whenever we have a furniture re- jig and want to check sizes before buying.

MontyDonsBlueScarf · 27/12/2023 20:11

Whatever size you buy, unless you are super disciplined you will fill it and eventually it will be too small. Just get the biggest you can fit/afford.

Seaside3 · 27/12/2023 20:14

@Morrisons00 it's custom, so 8 x 15.

@Elmo22 definitely go for the biggest you can fit/afford. But as one person above said, it will be filled, whatever size...

Thanks for all the advice, folks, much appreciated.
