How to do a mist coat for new plaster

Newly plastered house & we need to do a mist coat

The plasterer has suggested 50/50 paint and water - can we make up a large amount of this and use it over several days or do we need to make up smaller batches as we go along

I have always mixed up a batch and used it over several days. Make sure you keep stirring it though.

We used contract emulsion. Cheap and did the trick.

We are buying a paint sprayer to speed things up!

We have a big tub of cheap emulsion so will water that down I think

How soon are you doing it after plastering? We did it 1 week after ensuring it was properly dried out and used cheap Leyland white contract matt, not watered down.

I researched into it and some decorators recommended 50/50 and some said contract matt is fine, it was absolutely fine for us.

Contract matt is perfect for this but still needs to be thinned 50/50.

It'll be longer than a week for most of it and complete colour change on the remainder - the chimney breasts might be done in a few weeks when they have had time to dry properly as we had them swept and the sweep said they were very wet

I just used up odds and ends of old emulsion from the shed. I think we ended up with a lilac mist coat! No problems with it 10 years down the line.

I'm collecting half tins from Facebook marketplace!
