It's Christmas eve so the flush has finally died a death

We've DIY fixed it a few times and had professionals in once. It's one if those awful 90s systems where the whole toilet and sink are built into a cabinet along the wall so nothing is easily accessible. The bathroom tiles are tiled on top of other tiles and there's one of those awful pine tongue and groove dropped ceilings. I've just shooed an irate husband out with the kid to junior park run, whilst he's yelling "don't poo in it, don't put any toilet paper in it...." . Now I'm thinking, rather than save for the extension we want downstairs, let's get a nice new bathroom. We'll have to borrow some extra money for the extension anyway so we might as well use some of the savings on a reliable toilet. So... my question is, how do I go about saving on getting a new bathroom fitted? What tricks and ideas do you have for doing it to a high standard but without costing the earth?

We stripped back to brick, replaced the ceiling and some floorboards. It was a big job and we even moved pipework and rearranged the suite. We did it during Covid so not so long ago. We spent 2.5k including everything.

It depends how handy you are. We will do nearly everything ourselves, but did pay for an electrician.

The best tip I have is to shop around. Don't go to one place only. We spent months, over a year in fact, finding things. We bought handles for the cupboards in one place, shower elsewhere, wandered a lot of vintage shops looking for fittings and decent things to upcycle and so on. Our vintage suite was being ripped out by a developer and it cost us £13 and petrol costs. The same suite is currently available for £5k in a local vintage shop. Tiles were end of line, shower ex display. It sounds piecemeal, but a lot of time and love went into the room. I knew what I wanted and was prepared to wait to find each element.

It's our most complimented room.

Wow that sounds amazing. I would say we are definitely not that handy! Shopping around makes sense. With a 4 year old, an almost 1 year old who does not ever sleep and two full time jobs I'm not sure we would be able to take that approach though.

While you decide what to do, you can still use the toilet, you just need to flush it with a big bucket of water!
