Good areas to live in Leeds

My 23 year old daughter will be moving to Leeds to start a new job. Can I ask what are the best and safest areas to look at flatshares? Her job is in Armley. Would welcome

I would say city centre ( fairly straightforward bus) or the ever popular headingley.. avoid Armley its not nice

Armley doesn't have a great reputation. But it's close enough to the city centre for her to get a flat there (in town) and commute to work on the bus - it's 10 mins away

Hiya,
Armley is West Leeds and only a short distance from the city centre. I wouldn’t recommend living in Armley itself (although it’s cheap to rent there), it’s very run down with a lot of social issues. For an easy commute I’d suggest Stanningley / Farsley or Pudsey (LS28) especially if relying on public transport (excellent bus services from Bradford and Pudsey to Leeds all pass through Armley), so she doesn’t have to go into and out of the city centre (traffic is a nightmare). Parts of Bramley also okay I think. Kirkstall is nice but expensive and not much of a community vibe. Further out, Horsforth and Chapel Allerton are always mentioned but tend to be pricy and a bit further away. For a younger community Headingley and Hyde Park are the student areas and not far from Armley.
let me know if you have any more questions! I live in west Leeds.

Armley is rough, but the disadvantage of living in a better area would be the travel.

If she didn't mind getting two buses, one into the bus station and another to Armley, then Headingley and Alwoodley and some parts of Meanwood are all ok.

Avoid Beeston, Seacroft, Bramley, Chapeltown,
Hunslet.

Farsley - it's on bus routes to the centre that go through Armley and is also close to New Pudsey train station, and is a really nice neighbourhood with good community spirit.

1000s of decent wc people live, work and bring up their kids in places like Armley and Bramley. They aren’t all dodgy no go ghettos. Where do you think the vast majority of the population of Leeds lives if it can’t afford Horsforth or Chapel Allerton or ‘some parts of Meanwood’ ? Arch mumsnet as usual. Also from Leeds.

Morley?

Aknifewith16blades · 25/12/2023 12:59

City Centre: lots of flats, lots going on
Burley: mostly students, but also Young Professionals.
Kirkstill: Similar to Burley

Areas with less good reputations are Armley, Bramley, Holbeck, possibly Morley.

Other areas are nice/ naice, but transport and travel in Leeds is generally a nightmare to be avoided, so local is best.

Sodapop1 · 25/12/2023 13:02

Depending on budget, for a 23 year old - city centre will have good transport links to Armley. Chapel Allerton, Roundhay, Headingley and Horsforth are further away but popular with young professionals. Otherwise Pudsey, Rodley, Morley, Farsley are all cheaper but not as popular with young people.

Turefu · 25/12/2023 13:07

@Aknifewith16blades Morley has “less good reputation”? That’s a news for me.
@EffieeBriest Exactly. Many decent people live in Armley and ride their children there. It’s not “no-go area”. If OP’s daughter is 23 and likely not on big wage, living in Armley is a good option for her.

OffendedFromMorley · 26/12/2023 18:13

Morley has a bad reputation? Since when? As you can tell, I live here. What defines "good reputation?"

Morley has excellent motorway links both M62 and M1, a 15 minute drive to the city centre, good bus service, White Rose shopping centre close by and a train station that they are extending the platform for. It might not set a 23 year old's heart alight but it is still a decent place and safe. I would admit it if it was a poor area and I agree Armley isn't somewhere I would recommend.

@whenlifegivesyou Headingly has a 60% student population so if she wants to mix in with that lifestyle it might suit her but she might not want that at 23. City centre might be a good bet for her, lots to choose from but with two universities there are a lot of student houses too on the west side which is also where she might want to place herself. If she is in a house share then she can just see how she gets on transport wise from wherever she ends up and move if she needs to.

This all comes down to is she expected to travel into the office every day in day time or more unsociable hours? I would say stick west, so either west of Armley Pudsey etc or city centre on the west side.
