Thinking about moving to Bedford...

I'm fed up living in North London - I work full-time so maybe that's why I'm finding it virtually impossible to make new friends. All of my old ones have p'd off to Brighton, Surrey, Edinburgh etc.
All of my mates with older kids told me that once my ds started school, we'd meet loads of fun people. Despite all my best efforts to invite other kids around to my house, we rarely get an invitation back and recently my son was admonished at one house for taking a cookie (the child whose house it was had 2 in his gob and a fistful in each hand at the time!)
So we're thinking about moving to Bedford. I know you may be thinking that with my obvious lack of social skills (and my ds's uncontrollable lust for cookies), Bedford is going to be just as lonely as North London, but hey, a change is as good as a rest!
So, would anybody out there recommend the sunny town of Bedford?
Let me know!!!!!!

Does anyone know how is like to live in Sandy? ( village near Bedford).
I would appreciate your views

Mum45 probably best to start your own thread either here or maybe in chat as you may get more traffic there.

Bedford isn't very nice. I live about 15 miles away (in a dreaded village) and avoid it if I can. Try Cambridge, Letchworth, Hitchin, Biggleswade at a pinch though it's a smaller town.

We live in bedford and are about to move into a lovely village outside of the northern borders of bedford

Sandy is south of bedford have just returned from there. I find sandy nice enough, close to the frosts garden centre at Willington - en route to Biggleswade next door to the quaint village of moggerhanger - just been driving all around there. There's the bridge farm shop, some nice houses. Also explore cople, Willington, carding ton, Shortstown and cotton end if you're going to explore the area for nice villages to live in. School wise the better schools seem to be in the north of bedford area but do some research on the south to be sure.

Hi, thank you kindly for this info. I know that shortstown isn't good. Will see what happens :-)

Not sure what you've heard about Shortstown. We live on its borders and my son goes to his childminder in Shortstown. Perfectly fine.

Bedford is a wonderful place to live. Excellent private schools, vibrant social life, home to Philharmonia Orchestra with regular top class concerts, a wonderful stock of beautiful Victorian and Edwardian houses, wonderful parks with lovely cafes and our jewel in the crown the Embankment! You could go anywhere in the world and still be impressed with our Embankment. Regular local, farmers and flower markets, all within 35 minutes of St Pancras. We have our annual regatta and our bi annual river festival. Bedford is the best kept secret ever!

Hey, I saw you were waiting for a mother from Bedford to defend her territory. I'm a stay at home father, the wife works (Chef/ mechanic), while i cook, clean, and look after at least 3 kids (I also babysit for others). Prices of homes are way to high, but that's because of the link on the train to London, and ease of access to the A1, the M1 and the A421. There are some places that are nice, like Bromham, Clapham, etc - they're a little out of Bedford central by a few miles, but far enough away from the life of Chav's, the smog and the constant problems with rising crime. Bedford central is bad, but if you go to say Thurleigh, Sharnbrook, etc - one of the nearby villages 6+ miles out, then you'll be fine, the countryside out there is lovely. Looking for friends? That is all down to taste really. If you're a clubber, you'll find them friday and saturday night. Into cross stitch, reading etc? take your toddler to the library Thursday mornings. Everyone has a niche here - if you want to know about Bedford central however, read Terry Pratchet's 'Discworld' - his twin towns Ankh-Morpork is (I say this with absolute sincerity) a perfect description in every way.
