Where to move in Nottingham for non driving family

Hi there,

Any recommendations of where to move in Nottingham for good public transport and schools? One of us occasionally commutes to London, another is at the university a couple of times a week. Would like decent schools - primary and secondary - for 6 year old - friendly, happy atmosphere more important than results. Ideally we would like to live in the City, but I understand the school options are not so great - although there are some newish schools opened by "nova education trust" - eg Nottingham Free School and Nottingham University Academy of Science and Tech. But as they are new, can't seem to find too much information about them. We are currently in another Midlands town and main reason to move is we are totally fed up and bored and want to live in a city.

West Bridgford ticks a lot of boxes for most families.

West bridgford very nice, quite pricey though. Transport pretty good everywhere really. Wollaton good for schools and the university.

BurbageBrook · 20/12/2023 13:37

I agree West Bridgford is lovely but you'd still have two buses to the uni without a car so Beeston or Wollaton might be better bets. I think Bluecoat Wollaton is meant to be a decent school.

Nearlythere80 · 20/12/2023 14:08

Oh beeston yes very good with the tram

electriclight · 20/12/2023 18:50

West Bridgford is the first choice who want to be in the city.

Several nice market towns with train stations and good schools for those happy to commute - Burton Joyce, Bingham, Southwell all very popular.

MyLadyTheKingsMother · 20/12/2023 18:58

Beeston. Thriving town center, tram links to city, train station with links to London. Fairly reasonable house prices.

Unsure on schools as I live in the next town over.

I hear good things about Chilwell academy though (senior school)

MyLadyTheKingsMother · 20/12/2023 19:01

Would not recommend West Bridgeford. The traffic is insane at all hours near trent bridge.

Mapletreelane · 21/12/2023 08:48

West Bridgford as other posters suggest does tick most of your boxes , schools and excellent public transport links into the City, and is 20 mins on bus from station (the bus route avoids the congestion an earlier poster mentioned over Trent Bridge). However there is no direct link to the University via public transport.

Wollaton and Beeston are probably a better choice, close to the University and again really good public transport.

Nottingham does have an excellent public transport service, trams and buses.

Wollaton or Beeston. West Bridgford has no direct link to Nott Uni or NTU Clifton campus.

Does a bit depend on your budget for housing. Huge variety in house price according to area here

oefawefhoiEHF · 21/12/2023 11:48

@Nearlythere80

Budget hopefully around 600k!

Do you know anything about the schools in Beeston?

Was also thinking about the Park/ Mapperly Park/ Sherwood - but the schools there are the new ones I mentioned which don't seem so well established.

Basically if you are not too far out and on the tram network you will always be able to get to the railway station easily and the university maybe with a change of lines. Beeston is more convenient for the university and also has a railway station, not sure whether London trains stop there. Nottingham is also increasingly cycle friendly especially south/west side (flatter).
West Bridgford is well connected to the city centre but not anywhere else, the two secondary schools are very oversubscribed. There are plenty of other OK schools. Our DC were well supported at Nottingham Emmanuel School which is part of the same trust as Bluecoat.

You have a good budget but the best way is to come for a couple of days and go round the areas to see what suits you best I would be very surprised if you get a property at the park for 600k I live in wollaton its lovely here the schools are good there is good transport link and it's still classed as city there is prices I thinking for most budgets but only you can really see the areas and know if they are right for you.

I live in Lenton, and didn't drive for 10 years. I love driving, but hate driving in Nottingham because of the one way systems.

Beeston definitely. good trains to London, on the tram network, nice schools, nice area.

my dc went to Roundhill in Beeston when we lived there - lots of parents worked at the university if that is your crowd.
