Is this something to contact the landlord over? (Weird smell)

Our downstairs bathroom has a weird and horrible smell that appeared late last week. I thought maybe one of my children had “missed” when weeing (even though it didn’t smell like old wee) so I scrubbed the whole bathroom. Smell still there. Our weekly cleaner came today, cleaned thoroughly again, smell still there. In fact, a little stronger.

I am now wondering if it’s a dead mouse in the walls?!

Is this something I contact my landlord over? I don’t want to keep bothering her. I’ve asked her for a few things lately - all legitimate - but still…

Also - any ideas on what the smell might be?!? It smells like something rotting - it’s a fowl smell.

Dead rat. They honk.

Is there a shower in there that doesn’t get used much? I find I have to force the kids to shower in ours once a week ( which they hate as it’s small and crap) or the drains dry out and stink.

There’s no shower - it’s a v small downstairs loo and a sink.

The room backs directly onto an outside store that we can’t currently get into because scaffolding is blocking the door of the store (if that makes sense); scaffolding is up because of a leak in the roof! (Hence why I feel like I’m constantly bothering the landlady for something!)

The room being where it is me wonder if it’s a dead thing in the outside store cupboard - or in the walls.

Do you think this is something I should call the landlady about? I want to because the smell is hideous and we have people coming to stay for Christmas… but I feel like it’s always something!

Could well be that something has died in there, hopefully not someone's missing cat :((

Oh gosh that would be awful! But I would have heard the meowing I think. The store has been blocked for about 10 days, DH has seen mouse droppings in there before.

We hardly ever use it, so are unlikely to have let something in (and it’s never left wide open), I think if it’s a sad dead thing, it’d have to be small enough to have squeezed through a door gap or a hole etc.

Really don’t know what to do about it! It’s a honking smell!

I would presume a dead rodent as well. The smell does get less bad after a few days so even if you can't get into that store to find it and get it out, the smell should clear up in its own.

How long is the scaffolding due to be up for? Has the roof repair begun yet?

Unfortunately, until you are able to access the store, which is the most likely source of the smell, what do you think your landlord can do?

I'd just shut the door and keep it well ventilated for now, use my other bathroom(s) and hope the foul smell goes before your guests arrive.

MrsSkylerWhite · 19/12/2023 10:24

Give the plug hole a sniff, may be coming from there?

The work hasn’t started yet - so the scaffolding will be up for a while I think!

I tried again with the store and I can get it open a crack and the smell isn’t coming from there (I don’t think! Hard to properly get my nose in!).

So now I’m thinking something inside the wall or… really not sure! It’s a terrace, so could be in the wall coming from next door, which is empty and about to go up for rent / sale (not sure which). But it looks clean and clear next door so I’d be surprised?

I am going to give the plughole a sniff as PP suggested above when I get home! The smell was as awful as ever this morning when I went to smell it!

Apparently coffee grounds helps absorb smells- maybe put a can of that in there?

That’s a good idea, thank you!
