Remove some wall to add light?

I'm in the middle of a kitchen extension. We've built into the side return to change from a galley kitchen to a bigger space.

The issue is this leaves an internal dining room with no windows to outside. We've opened the wall as much as possible and there is a large skylight right by the entrance in the kitchen. We couldn't knock down the whole wall (steel would be too low).

Would you just paint and style it to make it as light as possible or knock down some of the wall the other side of the steel beam? This would mean no tall cupboards on the kitchen for a pantry style larder.

I decide not to do an internal window but am now having a wobble about light.

I would definitely do it, I can't stand dark dingy rooms.

Houseystuff876 · 17/12/2023 11:20

@Strawberryfieldsforeverrr Do you think it would look strange? It would be an internal window to the kitchen

Yes to internal window. You could use film to obscure the view but yes do add more light or it will feel dark and depressing.

@trickyex I was thinking no glass so just an opening for light

No I think it'll look grand, a bit like a modern take on a serving hatch. I'd go for as big a window as you structurally can.

Thank you both

Agree go for the light now while you can change it- you'll always kick yourself if not! Like that window you posted- I think glass would be good as sound and smell blocker. Plus you could put glass doors into your old dining room section - open plan is lovely but can get SO noisy!

Houseystuff876 · 18/12/2023 06:39

Where would you put glass doors- the large new opening?

Yes would double doors go there? Sliding maybe?

Houseystuff876 · 18/12/2023 09:45

I wouldn't be able to do a slider as it wouldn't open on the right against the wall.

I'm happy with semi open plan for now as we have a separate living room. That's where the TV and toys are : )

Could consider it in the future if noise is an issue
