Hi, I'm hoping to get some advice on what to install around the outside of the property we've moved to. So here's our requirements:

  1. Looking for something which itself cannot be stolen! As I know you get wall-mounted plates and you stick the doorbell on that for example, (the Eufy)
  2. Don't want to pay for any type of subscription, would like storage of data, but hoping that'll be some kind of local storage as opposed to cloud etc?
  3. Need a doorbell and CCTV cameras would be good to cover front and back of the house
  4. Something that's not too costly!

Advice would be much appreciated as I'm a bit clueless! If you have cost ideas for your suggestions, that too would be appreciated.

TIA.

Fo cameras, you can have a look at Hikvison ip turret cameras. Typically you mount these higher up so theft isn’t an issue. They come with SD card storage or you could use an NVR ( recorder) if you want to record 24/7 and don’t want to use the cloud.
All doorbells can be stollen, so I wouldn’t worry too much. I don’t think people steal these much anyway these days. If you don’t want to pay for storage ( your CCTV cameras will be recoding anyway), then they all will work fine for live view without extra payment. Ring Hard wired camera is around £50.

Much appreciated! Will look into how much the hikvision cameras and a recorder cost, as well as their installation. All doorbells can be stolen!!! Appreciate the heads-up on that too!

I should have also said you can access the cameras and what is stored on the SD cards on your phone, you don’t need to remove remove the SD card. There are many many models of cameras and many different resolutions, so a bit of research is needed as to what you want. There are ones with a small white strobe light that comes on when it detects motion which is good for letting intruders know there is a camera there, and those that record in colour even in very dim light. Most have some sort of AI to differentiate between people cars and animals and can send notifications to your phone much like a video doorbell. Oh they also record audio, some models can play a message or sound an alarm ( for intruders rather than family as you can train the AI to recognise family, the postman etc so you can get a notifications on your phone when each individual returns home)

We use Eufy which you already mentioned. Why don't you like Eufy. Vids all stored on a home unit which you can access from anywhere and no subs. We still have some stored from June so it's big storage. You can switch cameras on/off remotely

Thanks SuddenlyOld and LondonMischief. Original plan was actually Eufy but when I looked into it, correct me if I'm wrong, but apparently if the camera gets stolen, you can erase the data from that unit itself and so you lose record of what happened! Although that's pretty amazing that you have data from June still!!! Can you add extra cameras to the doorbell kit? Ultimately I want to ensure no-one can tamper with the data. Otherwise I would love something quick and cheaper to install, as can't really afford anything too costly at present, hence avoiding subscription costs for monitoring or cloud storage (Ring)!

LondonMischief you seem to know your stuff! Please let me know which cameras can be trained to recognise family?

TBH fake cameras are probably as good as normal ones for deterrent if you are looking for low cost. You can also get fake alarm boxes.

Also make sure your locks are up to scratch, which is the first think you should do, and make sure they can't be easily circumvented.

SuddenlyOld · 17/12/2023 19:01

Yes you can add cameras. We got 2 as well as the doorbell.

I don't know how a thief would be able to erase any data as the cameras have no storage. Everything recorded is saved to your home unit. It all works on WiFi. We have our home unit plugged into the router. The only way you'd lose data would be if someone hacked into your home unit.

However if your WiFi stopped working you would get no data until it was fixed.

I've provided this inexpensive solution for several friends, which you light like to consider.

1 X Synology DS120J (eBay £50-£60) new £100
1 X SATA hardrive 1TB £40
2 X Used Hikvision Minidome cameras eBay £50-£60
1 X Wiring and POE switch £50

Total ball park £300

This will give you 7 days storage using the built in software (Surveillance Station), has Windows, Mac, iOS and Android clients.

Shouldn't be hard for anyone with basic network / iT skills to set up.

Really appreciate all the advice and info!
Thanks for that breakdown too Dbank and SuddenlyOld for explaining about the data, as I was worried about that.

GasPanic, I agree re the locks, I'm working on that! But would definitely prefer working CCTV!

LondonMischief thank you for explaining about the SD card, never knew about that and I like the idea of the strobe light, that should be even more of a deterrent!
