Extension legal paperwork required for selling?

A family member is looking to downsize from large 5 bed family home to something more manageable. When they bought it (early 2000s) they extended out to the side and also into the loft. Another family member carried out the work and it isn't clear whether everything was signed off by building control etc at the time. We're in Scotland, not a conservation area or listed building. Does anyone know the paperwork/certificates that would've been required at the time and whether these can be submitted retrospectively? The person who oversaw the work has since passed away which is why we're unsure.

The downsizing has been a long time coming and is likely to take a while to clear out the house and have it ready to sell so would like to try and get paperwork in order from the beginning so it doesn't delay anything further.

Your council planning department should be able to tell you if building warrants were applied for before the work started, and tell you the process for getting a completion certificate which you’ll need to sell the house.

They’ll most likely have an online website to start the process so log onto it and raise an enquiry. They’ll see what they hold and get back to you.
