Replacing Kitchen Cupboards Doors

Wishingonaplane · 12/12/2023 09:40

Has anyone done this rather than replacing the entire cupboard carcass?

Our kitchen is only 18 months old, but it's a new build highgloss white and while it's functional and "fine" it's just really not to our taste.

I'm thinking of replacing the cupboard doors with something more to our taste, but there's also a large panel on the back of the island, and the side of the fridge. Are these easy to replace?

Thank you 😊

@Wishingonaplane Other options to consider, you can get those door wrapped with the same sort of vinyl wrapping but available in lots of different colours including matt or wood grain, concrete looking too. Lots of companies out there do it have a google for kitchen door wrapping or you could have it painted. The gloss vinyl can be removed usually leaving an MDF door and this can be professionally done and painted. Or they can treat the gloss and paint over that.

Saves on the current doors going to landfill. We are having ours done next year as our kitchen is over a decade old so I have been looking at options.

@simolias that's really interesting! I didn't know the gloss could be removed, definitely going to look into that. Out of interest have you had any quotes for yours?

@Wishingonaplane not yet but it will vary with location and how many units there are. Some say upload a photo of your kitchen for a quote so no one has to trek out to you.

I replaced doors, drawer fronts and had new end/blanking panels fitted over the exposed part of my breakfast bar. It looked like I’d had a brand new kitchen and cost very little. It was a few years ago now but I think it was around £1000 including fitting. The original carcasses were from an expensive kitchen company and I got the new bits from one of the DIY stores. I was exceptionally pleased with the result and highly recommend this approach.

I travel a lot with work and have stayed in Airbnbs that have gone down the wrapping route and it always showed (unless other places had it done so well that I was unaware). My neighbour had her units painted professionally but it still looked like they had been painted rather than replaced.

I’d definitely use the replace doors etc method again

@Beachbodyready thank you for the reply! Yes I'm hoping it can look like a brand new kitchen!

@simolias totally hear you about the waste element, I'm hoping to be able to sell the cupboard doors (not for much), or donate them somehow if we do end up replacing

We changed our doors from cottage with lots of cut outs (dust traps), and mock wrought iron handles to B&Q high gloss white. We used a kitchen fitter, he hung the doors and lined them up very quickly and he squared-up the carcases. Well worth the cost. Cannot remember what ££s though.

simolias · 12/12/2023 16:42

@Wishingonaplane just be aware that depending on where your current kitchen is from the hinge holes may not line up with any new doors so new holes would have to be drilled. It might not be a like for like situration. We have replaced kitchen doors in a previous hideous kitchen and this was our experience. The original doors were used for another project in the garage for storgae and organisation.

We’ve got a newish build and I don’t like my kitchen cupboard doors. We’re the second owners, so didn’t choose them. I’m getting mine sprayed in the New Year. I don’t know if that’s an option for you.

Flockameanie · 12/12/2023 21:59

We’re doing this. Or rather we’re buying our carcasses from one of the big kitchen places and getting the doors, fronts, end panels, etc from a different place. Loads of places do this for IKEA kitchens, some for Howdens too. Eg Plykea, Husk, Custom Fronts, Naked Doors, etc

StillWantingADog · 12/12/2023 22:02

Yes earlier this year

we initially went to howdens who did our previous kitchen - they could do it but were super inflexible in terms of sizes of everything they could do. So I would avoid.

then went to local independent shop. Not sure what brand we got but all the various bits were made to order. I think we paid about £12k but that included some brand new cupboards as well as the ones where they just replaced the cupboard and drawer fronts

StillWantingADog · 12/12/2023 22:07

To clarify the £12k also included the joiner who was with us for most of a week sorting it all out

alwaysbreaks · 12/12/2023 22:26

I took a heat gun to my kitchen doors and removed the plastic. Then used zinster paint as an undercoat and then their kitchen cupboard paint.

Skala · 13/12/2023 07:36

Kitchen door outlet are good, they do made to measure doors in various styles and colours plus you can get samples. I did a quote with them for a combination of 16 doors and 4 drawer fronts and it was around £800. We just need to find someone to hang them for us.

Wishingonaplane · 13/12/2023 09:02

@Skala that's amazing thank you, I actually have 16 doors and 3 drawers too how odd 😂

Did you quote include baseboards or any side panels at all?

Just bumping this as I'm looking to buy new doors and looking for recommendations 9f where to buy doors from!

Happyhousehappyheart · 25/10/2025 23:15

. Place marking!

roses2 · 26/10/2025 09:20

I've just added my order to DIY Kitchens and it is coming out £3.5k just for the doors! That doesn't include the fitting because the doors need holes for hinges drilling and doesn't include the island as I am too afraid of someone removing the counter which is heavily glued down to the cabinets....

I'm going to look into painting them myself instead........
